  • Newb Question

My buddy has his own cabinet biz he found out I was getting into the "smoking gig" and asked me if I needed wood ? Well my first thought was hell ya....So he brought me some scraps today consisting of oak, cherry, hard maple, and poplar ? I thought I'd chunk it up on the band-saw and bag it, so what about the poplar ? Hard Maple ?? Any thoughts or experience's ?

I don't think you want poplar... maple's good... make sure of course there's no finish or stain.

doug check out this thread and it will tell all the wood you can use for smoking and what you cannot use
      http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/sho...d+chart&page=2

now as for cabinet scraps ..i would think if they are bare wood no chemicals , stains or any of the such , then i wood think it would be ok but make sure they are solid wood no press wood....and if any doubts take and burn it and see what it smells like if it does have any glues or anything it will give a off smell to the smoke....hope this helps

Well I have to start with saying something that I hope you already know. When using lumber scraps make sure that they are unfinished wood. You dont want to smoke with some kinda crap on your wood. But you know that Im sure. The maple will be a good score for a milder smoke. The poplar...I cant answer that. Cant say that Ive ever heard of anyone using poplar...

Oak, Cherry and Maple, all good woods, but I don't know about using poplar. Have never heard of using it or ever seen it listed as a wood to use. What are you using for your primary heat source? Wood, charcoal, propane ???

One can never turn down a good supply of quality wood and the wood coming from a cabinet maker should be great to use as it is already seasoned. Maybe someone here will have an opinion on the poplar.

Man you guy's and or gals are quick at the key board :) I'm using the wood in my MES I didn't think poplar would make the cut of desired woods so it will go in with the fire wood The rest is "raw" wood and looks like it will work great thanks for all the replies and sooo fast ! Gonna smoke a fattie today consisting of ground pork and ground turkey, stuffing inside along with some dried cranberries Thanks for the link Doc.......
