In my quest to the Gunny Smoker I had thought about making some high heat seals for doors and such from high heat caulks or similar and using vascoline as a release agent on the apposing surface.

Once I looked around for product I ran across many silicone based sealants rated as high as 600 F continuous heat. One in particular was an automotive gasket maker.

Is there a prefered product for this application that anyone has used and would recommend?

I would not use anything like a form-a-gasket or firecaulk.. How big of a gap are you trying to seal??

about 1/8th inch. Oh and if I knew the fiberglass rope answere I would have given it.

(just in case no one got the tim taylor reference, HOME IMPROVEMENT STORES, like casa dePOT, menards, lowes, etc.)

I've got some of that around.
used it to fix a component of an old bandsaw. worked too.

I'll have to dig it out and give it a try.

not sure how hot the shaft on a cheap soldering iron gets. guess it's another 'suck-it-and-see' job :-)

I went to ACE and bought some fireplace door gasket and used another product (can't remember the name) that came in a tube and was red to seal the gasket to the door. So far it it working fine. I'll check the red tube stuff and find the name.

Several years ago, Mom (DJDEB) talked about how she sealed her doors on her smoker. She would take high temp silicon caulking, run a bead of it around the door, placed saran wrap over it, closed the door, and the bead of chaulking squeezed into the areas that was not being sealed with the metal door. Let the caulking dry, and the saran wrap peels right off.

The caulking will fill any gaps to give a good seal.

Just a thought.

What you're looking for is Stove Gasket Cement, good to 2000 degrees. If you have an Ace Hardware nearby, you're good to go and it's cheap:

BTW, if you also want a gasket, search for a Rutland gasket. Ace has them as well. I would say it's much better than the BGE felt gasket. They will cinge. I'm replacing my BGE gasket this spring with a rutland gasket which are much better. For any BGE users, you only have to put it on the main unit and strip everything off the lid. With it only on the lower/main unit, it will seal and be good to go. No need to have it on the lid. Here's a link of what I'm talking about: 5/8" is what you want to use on an Egg:
