sweet_magnolia 03-18-2010, 03:15 PM I started seeing my early spring flowers popping up in my garden in January.

They survived the 2-4 inches of snow we got a few times in February and this morning on my way out the door to work, I saw some of my mini daffodils blooming!

I love this time of year. It's so exciting to see what comes up that I put out last year that I forgot about. But I've got to get to work soon on getting the leaves raked out!
Thanks for checking out my flowers. Happy Spring!!!!

SmokinLee 03-18-2010, 04:00 PM Love spring, it's amazing what a week and a half of warm weather brought. I was walking around the pond last week and it still had ice except for about a foot around the parameter. There I seen a turtle peeking out from under the ice, now one week later no ice at all. Tadpoles, frogs and alot of our seasonal birds are back minus a few. I have seen flocks of geese and flocks of swans flying north. Funny thing there was a flock of swans the other day, maybe 100 and among them was one lone goose about half way down the V formation. Hey rich you harvesting saffron?

I had a lot of crocus last year that bloomed in the snow. This year only one little lonely plant came up :noidea:

That would so awesome to see a flock of swans! We have seen many Great Blue Heron flocks this year and they were amazing!
I have about 25 saffron crocus in my garden that are still fairly new plants. I am hoping they will do something this year and I can get at least a little saffron...but those bloom in the fall so I'll have to wait and see what I get.
SmokinLee 03-18-2010, 04:13 PM That would be cool to pluck some saffron, I know only a certain variety produces it but not sure which one. Good luck with this anyway. And OH KNOW the herons are on their way just when I am getting ready to re-stock my pond with fish. A few years back I put some trout in there and was planning on catching and eating in the fall, heck they didn't last a week the herons got em all. I really wanted to give them some lead poisoning LOL

I was out cleaning up my yard today. The snow has finally melted enough where I can at least get in part of my garden. There is still snow on the North side of the house.
Do you grow veggies and flowers or just flowers?

Thanks, Mo! I have several gardens around our house for flowers and a small raised bed in the back yard for veggies. Last year it looked a little like this: http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3330
I'm probably not putting corn out this year and save that space for something else.
Same here... Our buds are just popping out all over...

sweet_magnolia 04-01-2010, 01:06 PM I've got lots of blooms now. Daffodils and hyacinths. With the 80 degree weather we have today and tomorrow it won't be long before everything is up :banana_smiley: Tulips will be the next to bloom. I got most of the leaves raked out yesterday but took these before any of that work.

The hyacinths smell so good. As soon as I pull into the driveway and open my truck door, I can smell them. Spring is definitely here. You know that in Kentucky when you start to see the little ones out

Had some GREAT Super lemon haze (current best in the world a.k.a Cannabis Cup Winner) but that's all gone, so on to the Skywalker :banana_smiley:
On the flower side I just finished planting love-in-a-mist, California and lilac pompom poppies, borage and celios, tons of different colored zinnias and a few others.
Marigolds, nasturtium and more borage will go into the veggie garden as companion plants.
Bbqgoddess 04-02-2010, 10:59 PM Becky your garden is off to a beautiful start, I remember last years pictures, it is gorgeous! I hope your friend that slithering icky thing is not back this year!
My BFF from high school's father is a retired jockey, they have a good size ranch. We have a good sized Easter picnic out there every year, and the greatest thing about spring at the ranch is all the babies that are trotting around! That is a great picture! When Cabana boy was small, he could have cared less about the horses, but the babygirl, she has the horse bug and I gotta watch her 24/7 there cuz she will climb right into the pens...
Thanks for sharing the beginning of your rocking' garden Becky!
sumosmoke 04-03-2010, 05:45 AM Living in FL doesn't provide those type of spring moments when plants start popping up from the ground, as we go from a tad cold to HOT!. Being in D.C. this past week, I got to witness the new bulbs popping through the ground, and they're beautiful!
Loved your pics, Becky! Also loved Ken's pics, too (whee!!)

sweet_magnolia 04-05-2010, 07:57 AM Thanks, everyone!
I hope your friend that slithering icky thing is not back this year!
Oh, yes they are back. We saw 5 over the weekend, in the flower garden, the veggie garden and around the back yard. I'm going to try some snake repellent this year. At least they don't get in our house like they do our neighbors  It' so strange...we live about 1 mile from downtown Lexington and we have more snakes around then I ever saw growing up in the country. :noidea:

richoso1 04-09-2010, 02:15 PM Thanks for sharing the pics, like you said it's a nice time of the year. Smoke and seeds forever.
sweet_magnolia 04-16-2010, 04:20 PM My flowers are continuing to pop up and bloom. This past week we have had a male and female cardinal hanging around, which is very unusual for our yard but I did put a feeder out a couple of weeks ago. They haven't found it but they have found seed on the ground. They are so fun to watch. The female must be getting ready to drop some eggs because every time the male finds anything to eat she runs over and he passes it to her. It's sweet to see how he takes care of her.
