    Gunny Smoker Progress with Pics

The first order of business was to decide what type of smoker this was going to be. After taking into account my limited tools and metal skills I decided to adapt a simple vertical design with UDS similarities. So far so good and pics below.

Take a good hard look and some preliminary measurements:

    A good hard power wash:

2 sets of badly rusted rails had to be ground out. 2 sets of rails and grate frames fabricated from tube stock and fit was good. Plate for heat deflector not yet drilled but cut to size and fit.

    Floor plate dry fit also:

Exhaust damper made from 4 inch SS blast gate cut and dry fit:

All components being dry fit before permanent installation seems a reasonable course for me. I still need expanded metal on grates with tabs so they won’t tip when slid out and charcoal basket and ash pan.

Boy that is coming along good. You'll get lotts 'o enjoyment outta that smoker. I think the dry fit is definitely the reasonable route. Kinda like the sayin' goes..."measure twice, cut once" Looking good

Thanks everyone. Next will be predrilling the heat deflector. While 14 1.5 inch holes was the plan I have no way of stamping or cutting those. I will after figuring total area of the 1.5 holes substituting 32 1 inch holes first drilled to half inch and then widened to 1 inch with a step bit. Local shop wanted 84 bucks to cut the 1.5s so this is my solution. If ya are good at math ya may want to check my figures.
