  • Quick makeshift green house, lots of veggies

Have not smoked anything is a while so I thought I would post my makeshift green house. Warm weather came extra early this year to Minnesota so I thought it would be a good time to set the plants into larger containers and make a quick green house.

Started with 2x12 boards, 114" long x 44" wide. Took a 1" wide wood spade bit and bored holes at a steep angle 3/4 of the way into the board along the longest of the boards towards the top. Did this on both sides. I then took 1/2" pvc, cut it at 5", and stuck them into the holes to make the hoops. Next, threw 4mil plastic over it and fastened it down with strips of 1x3. Walla, instant greenhouse. Inside most of the veggies for this year. 16 Romas, 3 Big boys, 2 Cheeries, 10 Paprika, 5 Tomatillo, 12 Jalapeno, 6 Habanero, 5 Banana, 6 Pasillo for Molle, 5 Giant Marconni, 10 Cubanelles, 8 Giant stuffed Hybrid, 8 California Bells, 10 Cayenne, 12 Long Green, 3 Buternut squash, 2 Zuchinni, 2 Pumpkin pie, 2 Dills Atlantic Giant Pumpkin, 3 Honey dew melons, 3 Watermelons, 3 pickles. More green veggies to come still.

Here is a shot of how the pvc looks as it sits inside the holes.

    Hoops all up.

    Another view.

    Plastic over it and secured.

Veggies ready for their new home.

Total time making this, about 2 hours.

Looks great. I used to set my plants out in a coldframe in early spring. Problem is that you cant protect them on cold nights...Some 5 gal. buckets set inside will absorb heat in the day and release it at night...might help...I know we got some cold snaps coming yet here in Ks.

Wrap the buckets or empty gallon jugs in black duct tape, they will absorb a lot of warmth that way.

Love the look of the greenhouse, almost looks like something the feds would be on the lookout for, throw some camouflage on top and you're good to go

Very cool, MH. Here, you're really not good to go with the frost until after May15th... problem is, everything is bought out by that time (for those of us with out the energy to start our own), so I struggle every year in and outta the garage with my plants.

You just save me a lotta trips, my friend!
                      for the idea.

I hear ya. So many people down here have planted already. I think they will regret it. And some of the farmers have planted their soy beans already. One fronting and that will cost them BIG TIME....
