  • Update on my Ugly Cabinet Smoker (UCS) 05-01-2010

    Well, been busy around here and weather hasn't cooperated much. So all that has happened with it is...I burnt it off, made the lump basket and got it placed, sealed some of the tiny holes.

    But I couldn't wait to use it any longer. So this morning I got it going with 12 pounds of pork butt. Gonna have some PP burrito's tonight. I'll post the pics later. But it is running really good right now at 222 for the last 2 hours.

    I still need to get the inflow ball valve on, so it is just sucking air straight through the hole. Also need a handle on the firebox door, I have a rod that I hook on the lip right now. Plus the exhaust stack needs to go on and the paint. I did get Mr. Pig cut out of 1/8 inch steel plate that I need to get up there also.

    But, I thought CA and several others would want an update on progress and first use.

          Well they finally hit the golden foil temp of 165, so here is a pic;

          Lots of room left in there for more meat. That top rail is for the meat hanging rods. When they hit 200 I'll be back with a pic then.....

                        Here is the finished product;

                        Its all gone. My son, his wife and son showed up and it all disappeared fairly quickly. It was some of the juiciest pork butt I have done in a long time. Thankfully, I had gotten "bear claws" last month.

                            I have to admit I was a little skeptical. Not anymore. Guess I'll tell my buddies to watch for file cabinets.

                            That's one heck of a smoke ring too. Looking forward to finished pics of the UCS.

                              yep think I'll take trip to the local army surplus and see what they've got in stock.
                              pretty sure they do old filing cabinets :-)

                              given that the fabricators are lookingat £1000 plus for a custom built insulated cabinet smoker, I've got to go down a totally different route lol
