I see no problem in the layout you posted.

The bottom doesn't get very hot anyway and it's pretty far away from the drum. Go for it.

Personally, I think I'd put an elbow at the drum and run the exhaust vertically so yer not trippin over it. Maybe put a 2" nipple on the drum then the elbow and it won't get too hot.

Actually, I think Bubba (who got most of us started down the road of UDS) makes 'em that way too.

The UDS is amazing in it's simplicity. Lots of folks try to "improve" it with this design tweak and that design tweak but it's pretty damn hard to improve on the basic design. In it's simplest form it is one hell of a smoker.

Okay, now that you mention it, it does stick out pretty far. But even on a close nipple I don't think it would get hot enough to melt the valve at smoking temps.

(Insert Stupid Electric Smoker guy icon here)...... What does a refrigerator magnet look like in shape? And I'm guessing that where you position it on the air intake opening is how you regulate the amount of air drawn in? Sorry, never really paid attention to how my buddies work.

                      Exactly, Scott.

They're just those flexible business card sized or bigger flexible magnets that usually have a logo or some advertising on them. You cover up more (or less) of the hole depending on how much air you want to let in. They're thin enough that they cling to the curve of the drum well.

Thanks Dave..... ..... I was thinking they were the magnets that hold the refrigerator door closed.......... Kinda like SmokinLee's comments on Ken's new smoker build titled "Mini Sausage Smoke House" and Lee read it thinking it was a special smoker for smoking "little smokies" type sausages.... That cracked me up good.....

Sorry Mike..... Did not mean to hijack your thread.................
