  • So I ordered 44lb of food grade oak sawdust yesterday...

...'Cos dave turned up with my amazing smoker clone :-)

I added some ignition holes and here it is being seasoned over the weekend while I smoked some turkey snackstix and abts :-)

Had a good look round ebay and bought 20kg (44lb) of food grade oak sawdust from a timber company that only deals with kiln dried natural oak.
Cost £30 Including delivery, should come in 4x5kg (11lb) boxes.

I figure it'll cost me around 30p ($0.45) for 6-8 hours cold smoking.
And that's numbers even I can live with - you got to love economies of scale

Sawdust should get here tomorrow or wednesday. More pics when I've tested it :-)

Don't know what the original aamaze-ing smokers weigh. But this things made of industrial stainless steel, weighs 2 1/2 lb and will no doubt last longer than I will :-)

    God bless bored industrial engineers

I wonder if one o those things would generate enough smoke to use in a UDS?

Looks good CA. I had some issues with the burn going through the maze walls and igniting the next 'run' along side on my homebuilt version. Ended up putting foil over the interior walls to block that from happening.
You may even find the the interior walls could be longer.....too much dust burning when the burn goes around the corner. I lenghtened mine by making the foil longer than the original wall. Hope this all makes sense....
Also found that the easiest way of lighting was to drop a well lit piece of charcoal in the corner. Tried a propane torch, but it blows burning embers everywhere.
Very interested in your findings after the test run!!

The walls are pretty thick, but yeah cross ignition through the walls is one of the things I was surprised doesn't happen in the original models. We'll have to see :-)
I have a small butane torch/lighter that I intend to use - should do the job nicely without blowing dust around.

I don't mind it kicking out more smoke when it goes round corners.

Thanks for the foil idea too.

Other than that I'll see when I get the sawdust :-)

And yes it should easily generate enough smoke for a uds.

You'd have to play with the design (mostly the "track" size of the maze). Plus....the longer the "track", and the more of them, will increase the burn time.

It will also increase chamber temps.....more fuel burning = higher temp.

just bear in mind the amount of smoke in the uds is almost entirely dependant on how much you let out at the top.

This might takea few minutes to fill the drum up, but once it has you just adjust the top damper to adjust smoke density.

                    Hey welcome to the forum.
And yep given the great reviews your product has got both on and off this forum, you should definitely consider it as flattery :-)

I personally think your product is excellent value for money, in the states - but experience of international postal costs, which generally at least double the cost of anything, led me to research other avenues.
ie: 'hey dave, can you make me one of these ?'

Think mine is 8x6 - but haven't measured it. it was a plan for an 8x6 that dave took with him.

Glad you're not miffed at us

Looking forward to seeing posts of your smokes too :-)

                      Naw....Can't get mad!!!

                      Life's waaaay tooo short!!!

If a guy like you is willing to "Clone" my little gadget, it must mean I did something right.

I've got hundreds of hours of "Testing" my little gadgets, and sometimes threw in something to smoke. Lots of pics, just have to organize and post.

                      Looking forward to jumping in!

                      Good Luck with your "Clone"

                            Todd

                            p.s. Ignition Holes = 5/8"

p.s.s Propane torch works great, just have to turn pressure waaaay down.
