  • How Much Water to Drink

I keep this at work. With the weather in Florida trying to hit 80, I tell all the mechanic's to stay hydrated. I am a believer, 4 years ago I fell out at home, yard work hot, drinkin beer. Next thing I know i'm at the hospital. Louie tore my butt up. Plus the tests them doc's wanna do. That MRI banging noise convinced me. No choice with the colonoscopy......No comments Capt Dan!

This is helpful as summer approaches. I've been dehydrated before 'cause I didn't feel thirsty or the need to drink water and the effects were awful. Definitely worth it to sip on some water to keep yourself hydrated!

If you aren't going to the bathroom you aren't drinking enough water. You can drink a gallon, be sweating and still be dehydrated. I have passed out from it before too. First time during little league practice, then several more times in the last 8 years. Its no joke. And as Slanted said, when you wake up and are all confused by passing out and all of a sudden in a strange plus, tybes and wires sticking off of ya, life ain't no fun. That drum beat of the MRI isn't in tune or a tune you want to hear. Just as you think it can't get any worse, your wife and/or family will let ya know. Drinking beer and caffeinated drinks sure taste good, but they won't do any good. Also, sorry to all you Gator folks, Gatorade and other drinks can only do so much. Nothing, nothing works like water. More people suffer every year from heat exhaustion, heat stroke and heat related seizures sitting in the shade and cars drinking non-water, than construction workers and farmers in the sun all day long drinking water. So with that said, I am glad I am not a roofer, concrete flat worker or asphalt paver. I get as much of my farm field work done as early as possible and then take a break until 5PM.

      Here are two simple guidelines.

Drink as much water as your stomach will hold for the activity you are doing. Then drink some more.

When the heat index reaches 80 or better, don't stay prolonged periods in the sun if your shadow is longer than you are in height.

      Wear a hat and sunglasses.

Jury is still out on sunblocker and its effectives on heat stroke.

I think you have the shadow part backwards! sun up and sundown are the longest shadows.

Capt. you are so right. Should read "if your shadow is shorter than you are tall, stay out of the sun". Thank you sir for pointing that one out.

Now when it gets so hot that you break a sweat using the remote control or mouse, I find its best to stay in the A/C with a nice glass of ice cold lemonade, tea or a mint julep.

How true.. in the fire service only water. gatorade when were just putzin around but when we go to work only water is allowed. when we hit the mts. and forest to fight fire. the only thing we are allowed to drink is water till the last hot spot is gone. where I am at it is so dry, you do not really sweat like in a humid area. much less hit the head often. and most folks carry in thier vehicles H2o during the summer months as it don't take to long here to be in trouble with out it. during the summer 9 out of 10 medical calls are for deyhderation mixed with heat stroke. stay hyderated..
