  • chest freezer diving

I have had a chest freezer for a long time. we are going to dive in it for treasure this evening and smoke every thing in it as long as it is not freezer burnt. (well to bad any ways)

Just guessing I think there are several beef meaty rib sections, half a case of tri-tips, two beef clods, whole prime rib in cryo vac, oryx, bear, elk, mule deer, white tail deer, pork ribs, and who knows. But it is full to the top. and we are going to have a yard sale. three weeks ago we had one and brought into the den over 600 bill's. we should be able to top that on the yard sale this weekend.
going to try and retire the ole chest freezer and perchase a new stand up one a biggin fer sure.
the ole chest freezer has two baskets in her. they each hold about 80 plus pounds of chili peppers. there are only a dozen r so quart zip locs left in them and chili harvest is two months away.darn.
think I will keep the ole chest and use it for produce. the meat is to expensive to hide out in the bottom and possibly go to waste.

oh well time to hit the salt mines.

if it is that old a freezer it might pay for itself in the electricity costs, but them chests you can pack the hell outta them. bought a upright a few years back to end the diving... ended up buying a chest again also. have the upright going and keep a selection of everything in it so is easy to access, as things get used go to the chest and replenish it. when you get down to a point where the chest is getting down there then i move everything to the upright and shut the chest down for a rest. my upright also takes on alot of frost, more warm air goes in when door opened than on the chest... ie warm air dont go down... and having the 2 freezers ends the mystery meat delema too. lol. not to mention, you and hunter could both score on animals in sept...

nice idea for the freezer cleanout though!!!!

I have the same system as erain. Started with an upright so I could find everything, but didn't like the amount of wasted space on the top and front of each shelf and stuff falling off the shelves when I open the door if I dared put it too close to the front. Bought a chest freezer for the overflow, but didn't like diving through the top stuff to get at the stuff I want which seems to always be at the bottom.

I solved the problems with both freezers by keeping some cardboard boxes of various sizes on hand as bins to put the packages of meat in. As one example, it's much faster and easier to move the one box full of venison bacon than 20 individual packages of it, and as things get used up I can consolidate the venison bacon and summer sausage into one box and take the other box out of the freezer. Wire baskets would be better as far as allowing airflow, but cardboard boxes are what I have.

A list of what I put into each freezer, when, and how many packages, with room to check it off as I use each package, is a work in progress. So far I'm not near disciplined enough to keep those lists current.

I'm sure most people already know this. But if ya throw gallon jugs of water in as your freezer gets empty. They will store cold and help your freezer out. Then use them in your food cooler during the summer. You have dry food and cold water to drink!

Might be some interestin' sausage from the stuff that got some burn. Just trim it off to red/fresh meat, and if it's too ugly to smoke...into the grinder!

Luckily for me no freezer burn, and yes there will be sausage in their future!

This is one of the main reasons I gave my chest freezer to away.. Having really no idea what in the hell you have in the bottom of it..

I replaced it with a 24 cubic foot beast.. I have room for all my critters I harvest during hunting season.. Plus all the great meat deals I find through the year.. And easy to find as well...

Smoke on brother Yote... Lets see that Lang stuffed to the exhaust flue..
