In these parts, the 4th of July is dead on for digging garlic and beginning of the black raspberry season.
I had an awesome yield on the garlic this year and larger than average bulbs from my two little rows. I'm not a master gardner by any means, but I've found that leaving them in the ground much longer results in the deterioration of the husk which results in poor storage. Anyone starting out, keep an eye on your plant - when it starts yellowing, you are getting close and I definitely wouldn't wait for the tops to completely dry before you dig. I'll leave these in the shed, turning and stirring for a couple of weeks before storing them.
I've had the best luck with planting live, single starts in the spring of year 1, then digging them on or around 7/4 of year two. Once you get going, you have a great crop of nice size garlic every year.
(tried to get fancy and braid a string of them here)
Lots a tasty goodness for the next year!
On to the berries - they are just starting to pop.
black raspberry jelly! One of my faves!
Thanks for checking out my garden update.
