You are correct and yet wrong.
Galvanized metal heated is a bad idea. You were correct on this part.

However the ad clearly states that the trash can is 100% Stainless Steel.

This has been bandied about for a looong time. While it is not ideal to use galv, it seems it requires rather high temps for outgassing to be a problem..on the order of 550°F.

A pre-heat for a few hours to near this temp will help drive off the very volatile components. However the question of the heat source and it's proximity to the galv steel is the biggest question. It's gonna easily see 500°+ near the coals, especially at warm-up, and be not a heckuva lot less during the smoke.

The long ^ and short... I would not buy nor use that smoker.

Good advice Rich. Anyone that has welded will tell you that the effects of "metal fume fever" are very real. I have listened to people make the argument that "hey, I'm going to be smoking at a temperature well below the level that would release any poisonous gas"...that may be true, but the area close to the fire can certainly reach those temps. The bottom line is that there are better materials that are safe to use for a smoker, and we should not subject our families or friends to the potential for zinc poisining. If you have the mentality that this is ok, remind me not to eat at your house.

Yup, bad idea. Galvanizing is a modern miracle. Nothing better for corrosion resistance. But if you see any kind of cooker using it, , , just keep on walkin. Too many other, safe options available and for a buck seventy-five? yeah man get the Weber

Here is his statement on using galvanized trash cans for cooking in.

We understand that some people are concerned about possible health risks when smoking food in our galvanized smoker. After much research into this matter prior to product development and testing, TRASHY SMOKERS is confident that there is absolutley no risk of zinc poisoning or over exposure with using their smoker. Also note that as you use your TRASHY SMOKER the inside will quickly season with a dark, smokey (boy that smells good) coating that forms a barrier between the zinc plated metal and the food being smoked.

I personally have been using a TRASHY SMOKER for over a year now and haven't developed so much as an eye twitch. BON APPETITE !
Well what the heck in that case I'm sold!!!
