  • Tortilla Press

Been trying to make tortillas by hand. Having trouble getting the dough flat enough. Discovered this press so decided to give it a try. Haven't used it yet but planning to put it to use this weekend. Ordered from amazon for $19.00.

Looks like a good one! Cast iron is gotta be better than the cast aluminum one i broke the first time i used it. Snapped the handle.

A good heavy ziplock with the sides ripped out makes for a good insert to press the masa between inside your press.

Using hot water to mix with the Masa Harina and letting it set awhile before using helps get the right consistancy.

Wetter masa will press out more and make thiner tortillas. Too wet and it will stick! Just add a little more corn flour, it is very forgiving.

Bobs Red Mill from here in Oregon is the best Masa Harina that i have found. A little coarser ground i think. You may find it down there.

I also add more salt than they say to add. Just like the salty corn flavor!

          Good Luck!

It seems to be well built. Kinda anxious to give it a try. I made tortillas over the weekend and the masa was a bit dry. Didn't really know what to expect. Seems like the recipes are all basically the same so will have to play around and find what works.
Will post some pics of the process.

That looks like it will work just fine. I used to have one of those then started doing them by hand like the little old ladies in the restaurant windows here in San Diego.

I'd even season that cast iron hunk of greatness.
Smoke it.. and they will come!

I tried making them by hand but I couldnt get them thin enough. The edges were thin but the middle was a bit thick. I used a dinner plate and a dough roller but still couldnt get it right. I chalk up most of the prob to inexperience so i'm hoping the press will make things easier.

Did a test run today. Here's a few pics but forgot to take a pic of one with the chicken and peppers.
It is much easier using the press compared to the hand way. Definitely worth the $19.

Those look great. I love some good tortillas. I'm guessing with a little practice you'll be a pro in no time. Maybe Gary will come to your house and stare in your window.

A couple more practice runs and I should be pretty good. May do a batch tomorrow and fry up for chips. Have three avocados and want to make guacamole. the wife wants gumbo so chicken and sausage is on the menu. Guess I can use the chips in place of crackers.
