  • Hi from Western Pa

Been lurking here for about a year. Just joined yesterday. I have been smoking for about a year so I have lots to learn. I currently use a brinkman gourmet charcoal. Before anyone laughs I use it with an after burner v and have modded it to hold smoke better. Just the door and fire rope for the lid is the extent of it. The afterburner makes it pretty easy but I do not like the open bottom. Plan is to upgrade to a Chargriller Smokin Pro with sfb and the usual mods but I am not completely sold.

Anyhoo I the name's Vern. I have extensive web forum experience and am a moderator on one site. I know the value of the search button LOL !

            Praise the Lord, Vern!

Welcome to Smoked-Meat! A better than ECB unit is the WSM, but if you wanna go with a firebox, the CG is a good entry level unit. Really, if you can...see if you can find an old one on Craig'slist or somewhere...better built.

            Enjoy!

I have been eying the WSM. I like the out of the box ready to go aspect it offers. In addition to that I have never seen a Weber product that was not built and thought out well. I find myself attracted to the capacity of the CG though . I guess what I am really after is a unit that offers the capacity of of the CG with the design qualities of the WSM.

I have to chime in here. Have owned the CG and you're gonna have to burn wood splits for longer smokes. The WSM uses charcoal and wood chunks and will go for like 8 hours without touching it. It's a no brainer for me but it all depends what you want obviously.

Thanks for the input and while I am at it thanks to all for the welcome. It comes down to capacity. I prefer the WSM 22.5. Thing is I need the capacity to do 4-6 slabs of ribs at once. I am a total newb so maybe the 22.5" WSM will do just that.

The 22.5 WSM can handle 8-10 slabs in one shot as long as you have 2 rib racks, one for each level. It also can handle 6 butts, or 4 packers in one setting. Let me know if you have any questions.

LOL well yes I am. We are all guitar players here. I even bought my son a Pick of Destiny for his birthday last year. My screen name is a combo of Tenacious D and my car that was named "The Bee" by my friends. It is appropriate as during it's build up I blew two transmissions , cracked two heads and blew one motor. That was a ways back. I kept at it and got it put together perfectly. It now takes me to work everyday snow or shine and will crack off an 11.7 et at the track.. I am now ending that hobby after eight years and plan to replace a portion of it by taking smoking more seriously.

                              Nice

Love The D but unfortunately have never gotten to see them in concert.

Smoking is definitely a great hobby to take up, and nothing wrong with using that smoker except for the lack of cooking surface area when ya wanna do some brisket or lots of grub.
I use my gourmet electric converted to gas all the time and love it!

Glad you decided to join after lurking for so long.
Most folks around here enjoy good music but not enough fans of bands like The D, The Dan Band, Bloodhound Gang and a lot of the more "odd" stuff
