  • CoShell Fail

A guy at work got a nice new smoker and we have been sharing war stories, talking charcoal, sharing the weekend's smokes, etc. I gave him several different types of lump charcoal to try, and a couple of weeks ago I had 2 bags of Coshell placed in my office beside my desk. Several peeps on the site (Including Chi Sox Jim loved the stuff), so I've been wanting to give it a try. I thought I would give that a go today with some chicken and Salmon for later today.

    Here is the bag...

As I started the chimney of charcoal, I saw something that caught my eye...can you spot it too?

turns out it is a plastic piece...pretty solid and strong, and in looking at the briq, it shows on the outside too.

The stuff really smelled too...and not in a good way. I dumped the chimney out on a rock, and I see stuff protruding from another piece...it was a nail.

That is the trouble with Briq's...you never know what gets ground up and put inside them. I'm using lump again today and have a couple of bags of Coshell that may become part of the compost pile.

That's too bad... but you can't cook with it. Who wants plastic fumes in their food. Sorry about your luck.

Yup, no way I would cook with it. At least with lump you can tell if funny stuff is in the bag. They could compress moldy garbage inside a briquette and you would never know...except it would smell and taste like moldy garbage which a lot of briq's do.

Wow Dana... that sux out loud!

I have grown to hate briquets, just for that reason... ya' don't know what the hell they are making them from, and they become an ashfest. I used to really like Stubbs briquets... they were outstanding, but it seems something got changed in their formula.. The last few bags I've tried had WAY too much smoke and from that, left an off-taste in the foodage. I went back to lump exclusively.

There is a coconut charcoal product oot there from a company by the name of afire. The last time I tried it, it was very good. The briquets are not briquets as we know them, but cylindrical in shape, with a hole thru the middle. Nice stuff, good flavor, nice burn, not a helluva lot of ash, but also not cheap. I don't have the pricing in front of me at the moment, butt I'll try to find it.

All-in-all, ya cannot beat good wood...

but its enviromently sound and no trees were hurt in the process of manufacturing them... just that they use a catchy name with a diff ingred but bottom line is they are trying to attract customers that are GREEN oriented... this is a serious lol cause they have hooked quite a few members(not only here but elsewhere too) into thinking they are the cats meow.

          its all aboot $$$$$$...

At first glance i thought that plastic coming out of it was a flower
I'd like to know what kind of a flower grows out of briquettes

And not that that's bad enough to find plastic but then a nail as well?

Yeah, the environmentally friendly bullshit is getting old the way it is applied to everything. Last time I checked, trees were a renewable resource. Especially the hickory and oak variety.

Plus how is burning ANYTHING and making (GASP) smoke environmentally friendly.

Why the f are coconut shells any more environmentally friendly than hickory and oak chunks?

I sent a message to the manufacturer - "Saw a thread aout your product on a bbq site I frequent and trust. Figured you may want to know about it and feel free to register and reply to the topic."

Be interesting to see if they reply and if they do, what their explanation is.

Well, that sure makes me think about using that other bag...

Yeah bricks in ANY form are less efficient and ...well..who knows WHAT else than lump.

Shitty lump is still better than a brick I figger. And good lump...well, you know.
