  • 2nd Comp...much better experience!

Hey guys, well had my second comp this past Sat. It was another peoples choice with all the teams cooking butts at the National Baseball Congress World Series here in Wichita sponsored by Yoder Smokers and All Things BBQ. I had the Yoder Kingman in action as I was doing 6 butts. I had a great time, was way more organised than my 1st comp so things went much much smoother. Heck I even got 8 hours of sleep the night before lol.

My only issue was.....what do people not understand about a peoples choice event? I cant tell you how many folks said to me after tasting my samples "wow, this is good I wish I hadnt voted at the 1st tent" There was a tent that had 4 cooks all doing different butts and had 4 voting boxes, which they then combined into one. From what I understand they were doing a "Which do you like best of the 4?" and people were casting their tix for 1 of the 4.......sigh.

The NBCWS folks running the comp really didnt have a clue as to how to do something like this as it was their 1st time so no one told that one group they could not combine their votes. Oh well, there was no prize on the line other than bragging rights, and it was experience for me for the local KCBS comp in Sept. But man I had fun, got to meet some really good folks, and gained some experience. I was 1 vote from a tie for 3rd, but I got invited to cook the peoples choice portion of the KCBS event in Sept with the Yoder Smokers/All Things BBQ team so that made me feel great.

Anyway I hope all ya'lls smokes this past weekend went well!

Congrats! Glad that your second contest turned out better than the first. People need to have a little patience before casting their votes, that is for sure. I always wait until I have tried all that I wanted to at an event before I cast my vote, as you never know that the next one might be better than the last. Good luck in your Sept cook!

How's their Mad Hunky stock down there at ATBBQ? Been waiting for an order...

Good that you got some notice...but yeah... sounds like the masses needed some direction. Like being given a vote ticket at the LAST booth?

Glad is getting better and hope it continues that way. Are the Liberal BJ's still in it? Just have to root for the BJ's!

Thanks guys, I dont know if the BJ's were there this year....The 2013 NBC World Series Champions are the Seattle Studs after a 5-1 win against the Wellington Heat.

Rich, I was the last booth lol! as for ATBBQ, I know they are about a month away from moving into the new store so I think they are trying to draw down inventory so not to have to move it....shrugs, they have the MH brine whenever I need any

Glad you picked up some more experience. No substitute for getting out there and doing it.

With very few exceptions, I won't cook a people's choice comp. More often than not, the winner either has the best location or the most friends in the area. Not usually worth the hassle IMO.
