  • Lilikoi

    I just got back fro 2 weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was excellent. Did some fishing, diving, helicopter tour, and all of the usual tourist things including the volcano stuff & walked in a lava tube or two. While there I was able to try a few Lilikoi foods and I have to say that I loved the flavor of the fruit. It has a fragrant flavor & sweetness that I think will be excellent on fish & fowl. I brought back some jam & butter made from it & I can't keep away from it.
    Anyone else here use it much?

    Lilikoi = passionfruit.
    The condo we stay when on Maui has a tree just outside that we can pick our own fruit for making Mai Tai's or put in our tea. We always bring back several jars of jam. There's one in our fridge right now that I think I'll tear into just because you brought this topic up

    Everything else burned up in my house fire

        Lilikoi is wonderful, but my fav when I was lucky enough to be doing business with the city/county of Honolulu was POG juice (Papaya, Orange, Guava). I could drink that daily and NEVER get tired of it.

          Used to eat it off the bush/vine as a kid. Parents were mainland folks, prolly ate it in recipes the locals made. Nice stuff. We called it Lilikoi and had vines here and there.

          Lychees were my fav, so sweet. Dealt with the bee stings on my feet a few times, bees loved eating the ones on the ground. Used to pull a small branch laden to the ground off a tree from a guy that yelled at us as we cut through his yard after school..... Thanks for bringing the memories back, good times.

                  OK, guys, thanks for the nice comments but I was looking for any ways that you used the lilikoi in cooking, especially in ways that work for BBQ & smoking food. Come on, give up your closely guarded secrets of the lilikoi. TIA.

                    I checked my personal recipe file. None with lilikoi. Several with mangoes. A bunch with pineapple. Probably because I never see it fresh at the store, it never occurs to me to search for a recipe using it. Anyway...

                    A quick check of the World Wide Watched Web (yep, the next change in internet addressing will be the new subdomain WWWW, as in http://wwww.mybusinessnotyours.com/ (you didn't click on the link, did you? )) yielded tons of dessert recipes, but only one (so far) that is for the grill (leave it to the Aussies!). It's still a dessert, but it sounds fantastic!

                        Aloha from Hawaii guys and gals! Lilikoi is an awesome fruit and a favorite amongst islanders. It isn't used a lot for cooking under normal circumstances it gets used once in a while. I can suggest making a sweet and spicy glaze to pair with a nice smoked chicken. Add it to a BBQ sauce for a little sweetness and aroma would be nice on pork. I just love it as juice lol.

                          Aloha, Keoni!

                          I loved the time I got to spend in Hawaii (14 business trips, one week each). I learned SO much, like 'Likelike' is a 4-syllable word!

                          I always stayed at the Outrigger Reef, next to the Halekulani (LOVED Orchids there; open to the ocean; super excellent food!).

                          Sadly, I never found another client willing to pay me to go to Hawaii. And now I'm retired. And hate airplanes. But that's off topic.

                          Glad to have you aboard!

                            Thanks for the replies. It is a little strange that such a great tasting fruit has not seemed to made any impact on cooking, other than deserts, outside of Hawaii. I guess it will be up to me to develop some recipes that are good for non-desert cooking. I like a challenge & will share any good results here. Funny, the minute that I tasted the lilikoi jam I thought how great this would be in BBQ applications. It is very fragrant & has a nice sweetness and is not very expensive. Now comes the research phase.
