  • Outdoor Kitchen

Guess that's what I would call it. We will be moving soon to a smaller house in the country that has a decent kitchen but lacks a few other things I'd like to see. So what I'm contemplating is building something like what I would describe as a detached, screened in porch or shelter house, with potential to be a canning kitchen, outdoor smoke house, etc. A place for sausage grinding, smoking, canning, etc. Will also have patio type furniture.......tables and chairs for outdoor dining.

Anybody have something like that and if so, what do I need to consider?

Check out an EP Henry catalog, some of the pics in there will blow you away.
Lang 36 Patio, a few Webers, 2 Eggs, plenty of gadgets and a MES 40 Gen 2.5 electric for bacon and sausage.
My best asset however is the inspiration from the members on this forum.

My rough plan to date is something like a detached porch or gazebo type structure. With roof and concrete floor with drains. Would be outside, so no heat or AC. Rough idea of size is about 24' x 24'.

Under the roof, and perhaps against a wall would be some type of sturdy gas cook top with oven (thinking a used Vulcan from a commercial kitchen) or just a good used gas range with oven.

Two sink commercial stainless sink (three sinks are required for commercial kitchens, so two sink units should go begging used). Intent is a place to wash and clean grinders, slicers, stuffers, etc. Could also be used as a water bath for the sausage. Would also need a cutting/work table.

A cold water hydrant at the least. Perhaps a small hot water tank or on demand system for hot wash water. Whatever is there would freeze, so that has to be taken into consideration.

All that pretty tidy off to one side or in one corner.

Under the same roof, a modest cold smoker of the type the guys were using in St. Louis. That could be used to cold smoke sausage, hams, bacon, etc. Since the bottom is firebrick, you could also use it with dutch ovens, etc.. Might also have a fireplace for an open fire to roast hot dogs, etc. Had not thought of the outdoor oven.

Still not sure if it ought to be fully screened. Worry would be bugs, birds and such, but that is no different than my open patio now. In colder weather, bugs would not be an issue. Birds would.

If you have to pour footings, you might as well excavate and put a full basement under it. With concrete ceiling above, would make a decent storm cellar, and or root cellar to store canned goods, lager beer, wine, etc. Just saying.

He also built a big covered ootdoor cooking eating area, but cant find it?

You could heat it with those freestanding ootdoor patio heaters? I have also seen cold water "mister" systems set up on a budget that worked great
