  • " Scotch Bowl " WTF ?

Never heard of such a thing before last week
Thought the iron pot by my parents fireplace was just a dutch oven and never gave it another thought . So I guess griswold made a "Scotch Bowl", somewhere along the way a dutch oven lid landed on it with a good fit
In case I'm not the only one that never heard of such a thing :

foto fuggit seems messed up :

Called it good and made some barley soup with smoked chuck roast :

Not sure bout the scotch bowl, Griswold logo doesn't look quite right.
The lid is a "gatemarked" piece! They stopped making them that way about 1890! Don't loose that lid!
Any idea how long the parents had the bowl?
I don't think they started off together, but if it works....

I knew the lid did not come with the bowl , I saw your other posts about the old way of casting and wondered if those weld marks were what you ment

The folks at the wagmygiswolly forum sounded pretty sure of themselves in saying the slanted logo / ERIE / 782 was an accurate logo for a # 4 Scotch Bowl .

Yes, those are gate marks, that is how they poured the metal in the mold.

I've never seen a #4 scotch bowl, the logo just looks too light for the bowl but that may be how they made the scotch bowls. Doesn't matter if it works for you it perfect!! That would be a real handy piece!!!

why is it called a scotch bowl ?

Unless it;'s something obvious like the scots brought their porridge making bowls over to america. And that's why they're called scotch bowls.
Should probably be called scots bowls as scotch is a drink.

Or that's what they used to drink their scotch out of for a not-so-wee dram

or some other reason entirely unrelated to the scots.
