  • Maverick Probe Cleaning

How crazy do you get cleaning these
says not to immerse in water
do you scrub all the varnish like material completely off
The braided cable is coated as well. does this get cleaned somehow
or just what it does with use
    Thanks
    Dave

What ever you do don't let water get down inside the probe or it's toast, I just gently wipe mine after every use of course like always I had to find out the hard way also don't kink it any where or you'll get LLL on the display which means $$$ for new probes, yeah found out that the hard way also

      I ignore the cable.

Just wipe the gunk off of the probe tip with a Clorox wipe. If there is some stuff crusted on you can scrape it off with your finger nail or something. Sometimes if the end gets really discolored I'll clean it with a Scotch Brite pad or something similar.

Don't get too crazy with them. Just the last few inches of the probe is all that really matters.

I use sterile alcohol wipes before and after to clean. Leave the cable alone or it will short.

I use Mrs Bear's little sink sponge, with one side more coarse than the other side.

I use hot soapy water to polish the probes until smooth. Then I pinch the cable in the folded sponge, and pull it away from my hold on the other end a few times.

Then just before inserting the meat probe, I give it one more buffing with an alcohol wipe (The kind nurses use before sticking you). They're cheap if you get a box of 250 (The alcohol wipes).

I may have overdone it , washed them with water, tried to keep my finger and thumb clamped down so water wouldnt get where the braid met the probe... decided to plug them back in after cleaning. The food probe is reading ambient air temp but the grate probe is showing 157

              Yep, toast.

I make that mistake before. They are pretty fragile. I always have one of each as a spare. 2.5 years in of owning one I have replaced two meat and one pit probes. Nice thing is the replacements are 6'.

I wipe the grease off the cable for the annual cleaning etc or so, and use a scrubby pad before to keep the gunk off the meat probe. No water. I put them in the pit and don't use the meat probe till both have come up to 225+f then wipe one more time before poking into the meat.

Bear's alcohol wipe isn't a bad idea if you are really worried about little nasties.

Try drying it out for a few days. I had one I left outside overnight in the rain and it didnt work for a while. Eventually dried out and worked again. Had another one that never dried out or worked again. Worth a try?

Well, I don't use my Maverick probes on "her" so I stand by my original advice.

If you do need to dry out a probe and cable, just put it in a bag of rice. Leave it alone for a few days, then try it out. This usually works on remote controls and cel phones too. Don't ask me how I know this.......

You can "dry" them out. rice...100 degreeoven..etc. Issue then is what was IN the water...soap, whatever...will eventually cause a "short" or some conduction and then..it's new probe time.

Do Not immerse them. An alcohol/sanitizer wipe on the probe to the braid is all that is needed. Don't sweat the discoloration. I got probes 3 years old. And they look it

In order to avoid having to clean the cable I usually take a strip of foil aboot two or three inches wide & wrap it around the cable extending a couple inches onto the probe. That way all that is needed to be cleaned is the probe & water is not a factor.

You can clean the cable with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel...Just don't saturate the cable...
I do use the small alcohol wipes before and after each use...Maverick and thermopen get this treatment...

Put the probe end in the oven at 200 for an hour, and after a good cool down, it seems fine. Both probes laying on the kitchen table reading 72

Yep, alcohol swab wipe down of the probe like they said. Get some spare cables. Note the plug jack is slightly different in length. i have both 732 & 72 cable plugs are not interchangeable.
