I need to get a printer for my home office, something desktop, 8.5 x 11 paper size. Don't wanna break the bank, I'd love a laser, butt inkjet will do. Any thoughts?
I just got an HP OfficeJetPro 8710 a couple months back for work. It will print, fax, scan, copy, etc. and is wireless. Can print from both our desktops, kids laptops and phones/ipads. I print A LOT and ink is kinda spendy, but its pretty sweet. A little learning curve how everything works, but I like it a lot, and the versatility is nice for us, as everyone can use it. Bought it at Best Buy, cant remember price though
I willl never EVER buy another POS HP printer as long as I live. I literally smashed the last one to pieces and then sat the pieces out and shot them to little pieces. What a pile o garbage HP puts out for printers.
I'm reasonably happy with my Cannon MX920. It's slow as molasses in February but it's print quality is fantastic.
I've got an officejet 6700 all in one...prints, copies, scans...ink is expensive and it is equipped with an urgency detector that when it senses that I am in a hurry, it will launch into a 17 minute cleaning operation and just whirr and clang and zip back and forth exercising the print head and paper feed mechanism as it mocks me for putting up with this shit. I even bought a new laser jet and brought it home with the intent to launch the officejet from the roof onto the asphalt below the walk out basement, and was over ruled by Mrs. Engineer as she wanted scanning capability that the new laser printer didn't have. So I politely agreed and took that back only to be mocked again the next time I wanted to print something quickly.
If you don't need color get a laser printer. Good for about 3000 copies per drum + -. I got my last one for roughly 100.00 with one drum, Samsung. The trick is to get replacement drums from Amazon. Office supply wanted almost 100.00 and I found them for 17.00. I bought two, by the time they run out so will the printer.
If you want to find a deal on a printer try Cargo Largo's ebay store.
They are a freight recovery house and they always have a ton of stuff including printers of every make and model on their ebay store. I have bought a ton of stuff there...including a safe...the beauty of this for me is that they are in Kansas city and I can go pick really heavy stuff up in my truck. They also aren't too bad on shipping, and they definitely have some deals. They are a legit brick and mortar (GIGANTIC) warehouse...not some goof selling outta their garage.
Here is a link to their ebay site and I've searched for printers for you.

Thanks!
We've owned Lexmark, HP, and Canon color inkjets.
Questions:
A) Do you NEED "photo" quality printing or will simpler color handling (like for graphs) work for ya?
B) And critically, will you be printing often?
If everyday need is simple color or even mostly B/W, only needing photo quality infrequently, thinking of laser. You can probably ask a friend/family to do it if you don't want to go to drugstore or Office Depot or Fedex.
And if not printing often, then laser is the way to go; will save you money in long run. Why? Inkjet cartridges tend to dry out over time, meaning you spend lots more to replaced so-called empty cartridges if not printing at least once a week or every 2 weeks.
Alternatively, you COULD remove each cartridge, put them in an airtight container with a small damp pad (like gauze), and re-install it when want to print again, but what a bloody hassle.
As "near photo quality" was good enough for us for everyday color printing, we bought a Brother color laser around last Christmas. Quite pleased and still on first set of toner cartridges. We do print B/W most times. I ***think*** the printer was $300 including tax. For photo printing, we have someone else do it.
