  • Looking for opinions (or even better facts) on drum linings

    Good morning Meat-Heads.

I am looking for information/links/opinions on the question of different linings one may find applied to 55 gallon drums.

I've recently picked up 2 of them for UDS builds and though they were used to ship various foodstuffs, they do not have the reddish to brownish color inside I've come to understand is phenolic epoxy.

I get them for $15 a throw from a local bear bait purveyor (including lid and screwband-style ring) but they are painted or lined with a light cream colored application of some sort. The contents when they get them in are inside clear 3 mil polyethylene bags which they remove before reselling them.

Does this sound like the dreaded stuff I've been reading about which is said to be a "bear" (heh-heh-heh) to remove?

set it on fire. like fill the bitch up and let turn into a furnace. might set it up downwind. and set it up cinderblock because it will torch the ground around it. Rich will probably recommend one of those Michigan Tannerite methods but that seems a little extreme to me.

        In all seriousness though...

I am planning on loading it up with pallet wood anyway for a burn out after I've gotten the breathe holes drilled into the sides.

I'm only curious to know if anyone else has had any experiences with this light cream/butter colored lining on drums they have used.

At $15 a pop they seem like a steal... and if I buy in pallets of 4 I can get them for $50 a pallet.

sounds like a good deal...just burn it out...season and use.

If you burn that liner make sure you don't breathe that stuff! If I ever build another drum I'll spend for a stainless barrel.

                A burnout would work, however...

I used my weed torch to burn off the lid on both sides with very good results save for a touch of warpage from lingering too long over one area, so I know that doing a pallet or three in the barrel will most likely work well on removing the existing liner and exterior paint.

                However...

This project has provided the added benefit of an opportunity for me to pick up a portable 30-gallon air compressor which will power either a high speed sander or a sand blaster for paint liner & paint removal. Once my wife saw the immediate application and added to that the number of other possibly uses I could get out of it in other projects I was green-lit to proceed.

Glad I decided to try my hand at one of these builds...
