  • NM Elk

I went to the cabin this weekend and went for a walk to check my trail cameras. I have a hunt for bull elk with muzzleloader in just under 3 weeks. I got a lot of bull pics but I may hold out for this 6 pointer. His fronts and mid tines are great although his tops are a little weak. Hopefully this will be my next butchering project.

About 2 hours after this pic was taken I called this bull in to under 20 yards. I won't shoot him until day 3 of the 5 day season though.

Yes they are. Now consider that the cameras are right at one and one and a half miles from the nearest road, once you get one of these down, it is a 5-6 hour job to get them out of the woods. Can't use an ATV or horses where I am hunting. Shoe leather express only. I do have a game cart that helps a lot but I didn't mention there is a 600' elevation change from truck to elk. The parking area is about 8500' and the elk area is 9100'. I usually hunt solo. It makes the meat taste that much better in the end.

Nice pics AJ. What a difference in landscape between where you hunt and the rolling hills where my stepson took his. At least your parking area is lower elevation than the hunting spot. Good luck to you.

I managed to get it done last evening.

Yesterday was the first day of my 5 day elk muzzleloader season here in New Mexico. In the morning we saw and heard a lot of elk but could not get the bulls to come in. After a mid day nap, we went back out and set up in the edge of a meadow, expecting the elk to come in for the evening. We waited a few hours and the last 15 minutes before sunset a bull bugled. He bugled again and was a lot closer. I prepped for the shot and waited as some cows came in and the bull ran in hard bugling. His shoulder was behind a tree but I got to look at his rack for a bit and decided to take him. He is a good representative of the area but not huge. As soon as he cleared the tree the custom muzzleloader barked as 105 gr of BH209 pushed a 327 gr Match Hunter into his chest taking out both lungs. He ran about 20 yards and piled up. It was just over a mile recovery after we quartered him. My buddy and I managed to get it done in 2 trips with the help of a game cart. We got back to the cabin about 2:00 am exhausted. Each hind quarter is about 100#, the backstraps, tenderloins, neck roasts, brisket, flank steaks are another 85#, The front shoulders are about 65#, and head cape was 90#. Today will be busy as I am getting it mounted, so now to go to the taxidermist, I have to drive 2 hours home from the cabin, and I get to go buy a new freezer as mine is full. Then the butchering starts. It's gonna be another long day.

Nice! That sound like a lot of work, but it yields a lot of meat for the future.

I did have some help on this outing. My buddy graciously volunteered to be a pack mule. Still a chit load of work.

Congratulations AJ. Nice bull. If I was there I'd help with the processing. Lots of good eating there.
