  • Hen of the woods mushrooms. SCORE!!!

Well it's that time of year again. Actually, it's a bit early. With the onset of an early Spring, everything here at least in the Midwest is coming in about 30 days early. The boy and I were out this morning checking and moving some deer stands in preparation for bow hunting when we figured we best check to see if any shrooms are coming in. Big time. This was was about 20 minutes worth, right around 40#. These are a really meaty shroom that go great with wild game or stews. Battered and fried, they are fantastic. If you have an area with Oaks, now is the time to check for them. There are no poisonous look alikes for these. There are 2 varieties in this photos, the yellow one is a chicken mushroom, the rest are hen of the woods.
Going back in the morning to gather more, plus look for Oyster mushrooms.

I see lots of them when deer hunting, but I think they're too tough by then. Would like to try them, but I'd say here in the lower Midwest, we still have a few weeks before they're noticeable.

Wish I knew more about mushrooms. I might have some of these in the back yard but no oak trees. These would be around the base of a big cottonwood.

Never even seen those before. I'm too chicken. Afraid I'll pick the wrong shroom. Been looking for morels the last 2 years too. Be damned if I can find any of those SOBs. Love spending the time in the woods, but it would nice if I were rewarded for my effort.

Well hell dude, were not that far away from one another. We should hook up this coming Spring and hunt some shrooms.

Dont' worry about these shrooms, there are no poisonous look alikes. They grow around oaks, usually withing one foot of the tree. When you stumble across one of them, they are usually the size of a basketball and look like a big bowl of thick cut potato chips, or the ruffled feathers of a chicken, hence the name. The underside of them are porous, millions of tiny tiny holes, no gills like a regular shroom. There is nothing else like them in the woods and they taste GREAT!!!!! I like em better than morals. Very meaty.

I'd like that. I haven't had any luck on my own.

I'll be in the woods this weekend. If I find any of these, I'll post a pic. And asking how you cook them.
