Default Help with Masterbuilt XL

I got me a propane Masterbuilt XL, the big one! The Thermometer in the door is not up to my standards. The stem is 2" long. I am going to replace it with a tel-tru, my question is.... would a 2 1/2" stem or a 4" stem be better. Thanks for the help!!

Here are the 2 I am looking at:

The 4" will prolly give a better reading being closer to the center of the smoker... but it might hit your food?

A better door thermometer is fine, but I found a significant difference at grill level when I got a Maverick ET732 and used the bbq probe on the grill I was cooking on. My guess is the water pan deflects heat around it and throws off the readings as compared to the shelf the food is on. Personally I'd go with the maverick and not be too concerned with the door thermometer.
