Our own Rob Green (aka Wingman) told me there is a trick to helping assure a longer life to those ignition rods. He told me that they are heat sensitive, so if you try to "restart" a fire while the rod is still hot... it actually does damage to it. You are suppose to wait for it to cool down to the touch before trying to restart the fire in your pit.

I may be wrong on this, but it was to my understanding that Todd uses Lumberjack pellets as well. If I am wrong, I am sorry...I'm just going by what I have been told.

Couldn't tell you, Mark.
I get it from Todd in clear zip-lock bags---No markings.
The high end butcher here has started selling 20# bags of Pacific Pellets (out of Oregon) in various flavors for $14. All of them are 70/30 blends with Alder being the predominant wood. I tried their Mountain Cherry for my cheese smoke last week, and they burned excellent in the AMNPS and gave a nice flavor. Other than Mesquite, I have not located a local source for 100% flavor wood pellets...
Any thoughts on the Lumberjack Hickory flavored pellets? Can't find the 100% hickory on amazon.com. I'm outta pellets and looking to buy more right now as SAMS club doesn't have the sweet deal that they had when I bought my bulk of pellets last summer. As a matter of fact, they've quit selling them all together. Don't wanna go to the traeger dealer here and buy traeger pellets, which are junk IMO.
On edit, I can find the 100% hickory, but it's $50 for a 40 lb bag. Seems a bit ridiculous to me.
Thanks!

How/where are you getting a half ton of these Lumberjack pellets delivered to you for a total cost of 28 cents a pound? Looking at the GLE web site and following it to were you can order ( as a non-dealer ) they list the price without delivery as $310 for 1000 pounds, or 31 cents a pound. Give your in Iowa, potentially your shipping is relatively low, but surely that's adding at least another 5 to 10 cents a pound. You ordering as a dealer or something???

Not to mention that they are the cheapest pellet for those of us here in the Midwestern states. But, in order to get a good cost, I had to buy bulk...1000 lbs. However, at 28 cents per lb. DELIVERED price for a 100% pure flavor wood pellet....dirt cheap if you ask me.
I only use the 100% types. I have Hickory, Maple, Cherry and Apple(from a different supplier). I am very partial to Hickory and Cherry, and mixing them in a 50/50 ratio seems to be my favorite. The Maple is weak on flavor in my opinion, probably won't be buying much of that again.
I have tried a few other brands...BBQ'ers Delight, perfect mix and another one out of Minnesota that I can't remember the name of. All of which fell short on flavor in my opinion.
I am please with Lumber Jack and BBQ's Delight but I decided to try the new pellets sold at Academy Stores called B&B Hickory 20 lb. Pellet Grill Fuel.
They also have Mesquite and Apple $9.95 for a 20 pound bag.
So far so good but I need to do about 10 more cooks to decide.
I use Treager pellets, there are easy to buy here, use hickory mainly, some pecan.
I did order 60 pounds from Pellet Grill Outlet out of OR. I ended up filing a complaint with the OR attorney general to get my order filled took 4 months to get it straightened out. I understand they are now owned by somebody else but won't try them again.
I'll check out Lumber Jack and some of the others.

I also use Pacific Pellets Gourmet BBQ Pellets with wonderful results. No issues in my MAK 2 Star. Mostly use their Hickory, Apple, and Alder pellets.

Okay I'm getting this. I'm getting 40lbs of hickory with my new Yoder640. Won't have time to order a 100% flavored wood so I'll have to rely on a local for flavored wood. Just scouting around and checking prices I can see that keeping my Yoder fed can get expensive. Hickory seems to be the least expensive and will be the bulk of my purchasing and then add the 100% flavored wood. So being frugal I'm wondering if a 70/30 mix would be a good start. I did an experiment in college once with koolaid. Everytime I made it I added less and less sugar. My roomies never noticed. Then I went back to what the package said and they about gagged on the stuff. Human lab rats. Gotta love em. I do like mesquite and it appears to be a cheaper flavored wood. In Texas (I now live in Montana) I used oak and pecan I bought cheap from a tree service company. (logs for my wood fire smoker. That thing is about useless up here one reason I'm switching to a pellet smoker.)
Bottom line Find an inexpensive base wood and buy high quality 100% flavored woods.
I have been smokin with 100% pellets and blended them for my treager. 20% , Hickory, 30% Maple and 50% Apple. Now I am going to try 50% Lumberjack MHC blend and and 50 % of 100% Apple. When I smoke salmon I use 100% of !00% Maple.
Guys, order a pallet or half of a pallet online from Lumberjack. Won't regret it and it's CHEAP! Just gotta have the storage space for 1/2 ton or 1 ton.

All pellets are not the same.....
Some pellets are 70%-80% Oak or Alder, and 20%-30% Flavor Wood. These are called "Blended Pellets"
In other words, you're only getting 20%-30% of the flavor of wood you think you're buying, and the rest is Oak or Alder.
Look for the words "Flavored" or "Blended" on the bag
100% Hardwood does not mean you're getting anything other than hardwood in the bag.
It's kinda like buying a burger a McDonald's. Yes, there's "100% Pure Beef" in the burger, but they don't tell you what else in in the burger for filler.
Some manufacturers, like BBQr's Delight, are upfront about the mix in their bags, while others have labels that are much more confusing about exactly what's in the bag.
I can also sell "Oak Blended Pellets", but why, when I can sell 100% Flavor Wood Pellets, and the customer can decide how to mix their own blend of pellets.
The only "Blended Pellet" I sell is a mix of Hickory, Cherry and Maple. It's a great all around pellet for smoking, and puts out plenty of BTU's.
Some pellets like Peach, Apple or Mesquite, just do not produce enough BTU's for cooking, and they are often blended with Oak or Alder.
Todd
Well, Todd, I have been searching for the right quantity of pellets for my usage (small, as I don't have a pellet smoker) with the AMNPS. I finally found the right quantity for my needs (5#) of apple. I guess I should always come back to where I got my smoke generator. Thanks! I just placed an order, so you will probably see it appear.
