  • Thermoworks Chiefs Alarm ?

After reading erains thread on the smoke hollow 4400 propane pro smoker and doing a lot of reading and research I mustered up the courage to ask the Wife would it be alright to buy another unit to smoke sausage in because the GMG DB Pellet pooper wasn't high enough to hang sausage in
    .
Bingo she said yes (Life is Good) I will be doing the needle valve thing to get the lower temps sausage needs along with a door gasket and most likely some casters,2 with locks and 2 with rollers.

Now the question folks I will need a thermometer to monitor internal temps and I am looking at a thermoworks pro chiefs alarm. I had a maverick #732 remote and from the get go it would not work for me (Maybe I was to dense to figure it out) anyway I returned it Not Impresed !

I have a thermopen like many of you have and Love it (Great Product) So I'm thinking the Chiefs Alarm is what I need as I don't care about reading the temps from 100 feet away. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you wish to stay with Thermoworks they have another temp alarm called the DOT... http://www.thermoworks.com/products/alarm/dot.html
It is a little more than the one Rich suggested bhut it works great & is very easy to use. I have one & love it.
        .

Not to mention the occasional campfire

If you are an industrious fella, you may consider a DIY thermo...I'm thinking of building a bank of controllers into a small panel to monitor different areas in my rig. I'll start with a PID like this one.

Add a thermocouple and you are set. You can get a probe

or one that mounts to a screw so that it will stay in place.

Instant temp display, and the ability to interface with a solid state relay to power...oh....say a fan for your smoker or a crock pot for an instant sous vide.

Cool probes... they didn't have those when I did the Beast. Had to use a threaded one for mounting.

Don't scare the guy Dana..but cool idea if he's so inclined

I have a Thermoworks ChiefAlarm. Real nice unit, very accurate (.1°), much higher temp range 700°, and it displays the min and max temp of your cook. So if you have to walk away from a long Sous Vide or electric smoker, you will know if your temp dropped (power went out).
Worth the money in my opinion!

that IS a nice feature. Especially if you lose power on a semi regular basis.

But assuming this is just for the sausage machine, and a 4-5 hour or so window..and the meat is cured... I'd save the cash.

Now it you have other more involved uses... well- consider that of course.

I originally bought it for the Pizza Weber, too hot for the Mavericks.

Thanks a Bunch Fellas for your reply's. As I type the new smoke hollow is setting in the back of my cargo van in the box.

Spent about 3 hours looking all over Omaha Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Ia. Looking at thermostats and some more stuff that I don't really need but the wife is working and it is a lot easier sneaking that kind of stuff ( Smoking Gadgets) in the house when she is not here. I'm sure you fellas never did that kind of stuff now did Ya ? LOL

Oh Ya stopped by the Hobart dealer in Omaha and they just recieved 15 #5 Lem Stainless Steel sausage stuffers with all metal gears, 145 dollars a pop. I have a 24 liter F Dick that I have had for 45 years but maybe sometime I only might make a five pound batch and why in the world would a man dirty that big beast for a measley 5 pounds ? Yup I need to slip back over and get me one of them bad boys Too.
