The gage gets to 500° with the lid closed, but that's not the Grill Temp.
If it needs cleaning, it needed it when I got it, because it never got hot enough to sear from day one. The holes are all clean.
I had to clean the holes on one of my old grills, and actually had to drill some of them out, but these are nice & clean, and like I said "It didn't get hot enough to sear on day one.
But like I said I'm not worried about it---I got a plan, and will be able to test it in a week or 2.
