taiwan is better vthan china froma political point of view. But we don't do politics - so, basicly no difference :-)

Have to admit I just have a cheapo electronic kitchen scale. weighs in 1g - 0.1 oz increments. Goes up to about 12lb, takes the little cr2032 batteries (8 for £1 from most pound shops - and our pound shops don't add tax AFTER lol)

Got the scale from lidl for about a tenner ($15).

so if it was me in the states, I'd get something like this:

It's cheap, gets mistaken for an ipad (lol) and does the job.
Maybe if more american companies invested in china things would balance out a bit ?

good luck on finding any electronic that is American made that is not refinery grade nuclear powered.
even when finding power or preamp tubes for my amp they all come from china or russia- it seems that america can no longer produce anything that contains lead or mercury- yet we can import it but not export it or use it...

If you could find a liter measuring cup. You could measure up 2.5 liters of water to get 2500 grams.

You would have to figure out how much the plastic bottles weight and deduct that, but it is a way to get your 2500 grams done. I would use the one liter coke bottles to make a mess of 1000 gram standards, and then fill two with 500 ml to get your 500 gram standard.

Anyway that is one way to calibrate you scale and get it going again. Technically you should use distilled water, but the error from tap water won't be big enough to make a difference on the scale for kitchen use.

If it can do pounds, a USA pint is a USA pound the world around!

I'm ordering one for the wife and another for me.

I have been using a little cheapy .0 gram scale, but this one has a cleaner design. I like it!!!

For heavier products I use a standard flat top.

combined with a smaller scale it gives me just about any graduation range I need.

if you look on amazon the same unit is sold under about a bunch of different brand names. But not for $15 with p&p.

And I know it's not us made, but sometimes you just want something cheap that does the job.

ALso - bear in mind that many goods that say made in america are simply assembled in the states from components made elsewhere. The buggers do it over here as well. Sometimes it says assembled in the uk and sometimes not.

                My favourite review:
I use the scale to weigh my African Gray Parrot every day. I put a little anti slip on the scale for Buckey to stand on. We use the gram scale and he weighs in the 500 to 506 range. A sick bird will loose 1/3 of their weight before you know they are sick. My old scale lasted 14 years and the buttons were hard to use. Last night my wife actually used the scale to weigh some pasta.
I guess if bucky ever hits the 1kg he's eating size ! (man I HATE parrots !)

Hope they cleaned the bird crap off. Or maybe they were going for a pesto?

Your combination sounds like a winner, Dan, and I just might take that route. However, what's up with the disclaimer in the product description for that flat top scale

Jeez, $60.93 and your stuck with it even if it doesn't work? Another reason not to shop at Sears, but that's just me.

Not sure Mikey. I actually got my 44lbr from Cabela's using a gift card. Probably couldn't return it at Cabela's either... I'm learning to really hate that place. The reason I didn't link my scale is because I'd consider it bad advertising.

                      How about these.

Alex, you're 100% correct in the components made elsewhere. I spoke to numerous customer service reps from scale companies that had US made scales, and they all confirmed what you stated.
That being said, I'll still go for the USA made unit because every time that it gets used, I'll have that warm & fuzzy feeling that I did my part in keeping an American employed. Personally, I could give a rats ass about Chinese workers, their economy and anything else connected to them. I love this country more than anything in the world. God Bless America. Rant Off!

Yeah my wife likes hers. She looked at it for a few moments, then drifted off to the kitchen with it. Later she gave her nod of approval... Said she'd been wanting a scale like that for a while now. Good deal!
