  • Lye.........where can i find it?

    wanna do the lye soak on all my cast iron...........but they don't sell Red Devil Lye anymore.

    Will Drano crystals werk just as well?

        I would think it would work..

        Ingredients from MSDS/Label

        Chemical ....................... Percent

        Sodium hydroxide............. 30-60
        Aluminum.......................... 1-5
        Sodium nitrate................. 15-40
        Sodium chloride................ 7-13

          yeah i checked out the MSD, but seeing how its not PURE lye, wondered if it had enuff in it to clean the CI

            Know anybody with a bead blaster? I had a buddy of mine at a machine shop hit mine. Worked real good.

              Some of the spray on oven cleaners are pretty hydroxide heavy too... EasyOff being one I think.

                i like the idea of Rowdy's good soaking.........really getting down to bare metal............so then i can start from scratch.........i have some, so coated, on the outside BOTTOM of the pan, i can't see only PART of the makers name..........so really want to give em a good soak.........several daze werth..........

                        you can use wood ashes to make lye.............no chance of blowing anyone up.
