  • My baked bean recipe...

1 16 oz package of dry navy beans.
2 C Leftover BBQ diced - I used leftover ribs for this recipe
    1 can tomato sauce
    1 can tomato paste
    1/2 C Ketchup
    1/2 C Brown Sugar
    1/2 C Molasses
    1/2 C Distilled White Vinegar
    2 T Black Pepper
    2 T Salt
    2 T Paprika
    1/2 large yellow onion diced
    1/2 green bell pepper diced
    1/2 red bell pepper diced
    1 T yellow mustard
    3 T Worchestershire sauce
    2 T Garlic minced
    4 Strips Bacon

Let beans soak overnight in 8 Cups of cold water. Rinse the next morning and then boil in water for one hour.

After pulled from the boiling water and rinsed again, combine all ingredients. Top with 4 strips uncooked bacon and smoke in your smoker for 3-4 hours. You can add water if it seems too thick for your liking. I added 1/2 of a tomato paste can of water this time.

I have found that when making them from scratch instead of using canned beans, the more ingredients the better. I use to do a simple recipe and it just didn't ever turn out as flavorful as I wanted. I've used this recipe now for years and it turns out fantastic every time.

Thanks for sharing your recipe. Do you ever mix it up with different variety of beans? or just the Navy beans?

I've never used any other kind but that's just because I prefer white beans. I'm sure it would work out well though and add some new flavor/texture.

Thought you probably meant haricot beans - but checked anyway...

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, is particularly popular in Britain and the US, featured in such dishes as baked beans and even pies, as well as in various soups such as Senate bean soup.[16] Consumption of baked beans has been shown to lower total cholesterol levels and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.[17][18] This might be at least partly explained by high saponin content of navy bean. Saponins also exhibit antibacterial and antifungal activity, and have been found to inhibit cancer cell growth.[19] Furthermore, navy bean is the richest source of ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid among the common bean varieties.[2
Did not know beans were that good for you.
Great looking recipe. I guess I could mix up a really big batch and freeze.

Have you tried canning them ?

            have some bean

So what the difference between a tin of tomato sauce and a tin of tomato paste and how is the tomato sauce different to the ketchup ?

Never canned, always make it up when we have a decent amount of people coming over for dinner. I'm sure they'd can and freeze well though. There are usually only enough left over for my wife and I to get one more dinner side out of.

For your other questions: Tomato paste is tomatoes that have been cooked for several hours, strained and reduced to a thick, rich concentrate.

Tomato sauce is a thin tomato puree. It's used as a base for other sauces.

Ketchup has a consistency between the two, not too thick, not thin. It has a few ingredients in it like vinegar, maybe some sugars. I use it mainly so I don't have to use a 2nd can of tomato sauce. Two cans of sauce makes these way too saucy, like they're sitting in a thin liquid. I like em thicker, so using ketchup instead of the 2nd can of sauce helps. I then add water to get it to the perfect consistency.

Beans are off the smoker and will sit in the oven for a couple hours until the chuckie is done.
