  • HELP please. Stalk boreres have got me.

Do any of the gardeners here know what to use for stalk borer control? The only thing I can find on the web is more for giant crop production than a garden. They got 2 tomato plants and 1 pepper plant for sure and we've found 2 more tomato plants with a hole, so it's in there. I found a forum reply that suggested cutting above the hole, removing the insect, then taping and splinting the plant back together and praying diligently. That's fine for the plants that are already infested, but what about prevention?

Here is a good description of what I got going on.

We actually put liquid Seven in a syringe today and started treating by injecting above the damaged areas. Don't know if it will work or not, and I hate injecting anything into my plants. But them worms just don't seem to understand why we need healthy tomato plants.
The area of the garden that is infected is an area of newly turned ground. If I'd have known this would happen, I'd have burned that area down before plowing it up.
We may try the slitting technique if the others don't work. But these worms worm extremely fast. We have to figure it out soon.

                            Re:

Those look like the ol tomato fruit worms I used to get around here some time back.

If I had that I'd dust them with some Sevin dust 5%, and fast.

I mentioned in another thread the "beneficial insects" or "Predatory Insects" package that you can put out around your place and rather near
eliminate most of these problems. But they are around $35 bucks and they may only ship em early in the season.
