  • Meal Prep Ideas

Hey everyone.... I'm looking for ideas/recipes to do some meal prep for when our son is born next month. Didn't do this with the first kiddo but I want to make it easy for the wife and myself to make some good meals while she is off work home with a newborn and a 3 yr old for about 6 weeks.

I will be smoking a pork butt and vac packing it to thaw and reheat and will also be using the baked chicken breast in lemon juice I found here to pull it and vac pack it as well to thaw and make tacos, etc.

Plan to make a trays of lasagna and stuff shells to freeze to freeze as well.

Anyone around here do much meal prep like this? Doesn't have to be smoked meats just anything you make and freeze that you think reheats well.

    Thanks in advance for ideas.

Meatloaf(whole/not sliced), baked ziti, pot of ham & beans(vac pac in individual bags), rack of ribs,
Bout anything you like can be cooked, vac packed, & froze for later use.
Cook what you like to eat. That's what matters, not what we like.

First off, congrats on the new addition!

I do lots of proportioned vacu-bagging of meats, freeze, then to reheat, just drop the bags in a pot of simmering water. Takes minutes.

Pastas are good, soup is a quick easy meal too that freezes well. Sloppy Joes work well, chili and meat balls work nice too as they can be a base for many meals. Good luck!!

Crock pot freezer meals are good, too. Spend a day prepping and then pull from freezer when needed and put in a crock pot.

A sous vide setup..along with a crock pot would be advantageous to your goals.

Let me clarify my earlier post.
I'm giving my view of this situation from a been there/done that recollection after dealing with my first wife and the births of our 5 kids.
This is not the time to experiment with your cooking. It may sound good, but what are you going to do if she doesn't like it. You don't need a failed meal at this time.

At that time she (and you) will be under a lot of stress and emotions will be running high.
That is why I said your best bet is to fix tried and true meals that you know she likes. Then both of you will have one less thing to stress over.

And.. yes. While there are methods to help you along..now might NOT be the best time to experiment.

                    Congrats!

Thanks for the links and input. We are working on a shopping list and going to start prepping meals this week. Mostly crock pot meals and then I'll start vac packing some meats. We are definitely sticking to meals we know we enjoy and just adapting them to be prepped to just dump into a crock pot or pot of simmering water. I've watched the pioneer woman show before, good link.

I never really heard of sous vide until coming around this forum. It is an interesting method that would take some serious convincing to get the wife to try. But I can see where it could make some great meals.

Thanks for the congrats too. Our first child is almost 3. Just old enough that I almost forget what it was like to be too tired to breath. Nothing some red bull and the occasional whiskey can't take care of though right? Joking aside.....it'll be fun.

Heh... since it seems to be YOU handling this endeavor..just do it and don’t consult her. She won’t have an issue with a perfect steak seared with a torch (Or hot coals) in 2 min.

for a while there I was cooking double what we used and freezing half...
it stocked us thru winter rather nicely...
could try cooking twice the portion of what you like and freezing half...
then its not all work now for the time savings later,,, its just making a bigger dinner/meal...(for the time savings later)
                              that make any sense???
