  • What's the Thermometer Eyebrow For?

Seen them on Langs and some other smokers.

What are they for? Some kind of guard I suppose?

I have had 2 thermos unprotected on the SnP going on 10 years now and have never seen a situation where they would have been necessary. Are they just for looks or are there situations that I'm not aware of where they are really needed.

So is it an actual roof or full covering?

Cuz the only thing about therms is the glass and the surrounding metal housing are not water tight forever

OR, protection when you open the door so they don't run into something?

It's leftover from instrumentation engineering on boilers. Gauges had a drop (sliding tool or part) protection built to protect from a strike from gravity taking a tool or other item on the 31.7 feet per second per second ride into the gauge.

From boiler making standard back in the steam powered shop days.

Classic design standard from a bygone era!

I honestly thought it was a rhetorical question. But there’s the explanation.

Interesting Bob. I have seen them before and wondered what purpose they served.

                          Hmm. Well . . . I'm not sure.

I am a former boiler operator so the history is kind of intriguing. Although the boiler I operated did not have them. But then the pressure gauge was almost at the top of the boiler anyway.

Here's a screen capture from a recently converted video I took in 1992.
Pressure gauge in the blue circle.

Pretty cheap insurance for the Tel-trus I suppose. And another spot on the outside to showcase the welds. So . . . maybe.

Hell, I'd gofer it. Added protection, and bling IMHO. Ain't gonna cost that much more...

Yeah, Cost would be negligible. Probably have leftover scrap from doing the Lang knockoff chimney cap anyway.
