  • FYI for your pets

easter sunday after our trip to the nursing home to try and bring some cheer to the ole timers there. we needed beast food. So we headed to petco, normally when we buy the food we always try to buy a treat are two for the cats, and dawgs, we were looking at the bully sticks that were recomended to us by a friend. One of the store employees happened upon us and said very good choice for your pets (meaning the bully sticks) little lady from england now a resident and an american citizen. turns out petco pays her well she is a champion breeder of dogs and a rescuer of unadoptible dawgs. she alos shows dawgs and does the show ciruits. we told her about a treat that our dogs really loved but stop buying them they are the waggin train chicken jerky breast made in china. She said OH NO do not buy any pet food made in china they are full of chemicals that are bad for pets. only buy for your pets products made in the USA. and when looking for where it is made don't be fooled by markings stateing distrubted in the usa. she asked the type of dogs we had. and what we feed them, we said science diet she said no good. she said you buy the large breed I am sure, we said yes, she said your lab does not chew, just woofs it down the large chunks are hard for him to digest plus the stuff is not that good mostly corn an filler and not a good diet. she directed us to another brand about $9.00 more then the one we normally buy and said it is smaller pieces and easy on them. and also always moisten the food with water, broth are the likes as it can be hard on thier gums. she said she keeps a spray bottle by and moistens the food,
not as hard on theirs mouth and gums.
the lady was so pleasent and really cared about animals and had a wealth of info to share with us.
so we learend something and thought for those interested I would post here.

    Good info Kyote.

I used to feed the guys Science Diet and it was that exact sam deal. Large breed and they swallow it vs. chewing it. I have always added some water to their dry food.

About 6 months ago, I switched them over to "I Vet". I get it at our vets office. He suggested it for nutritional reasons, quality reasons, over science diet. The food is also small pellets as well. Since he's a personal friend, it was an easy call.

The cost is just a tad more than Science Diet. However, yard clean up is much easier as they are clearly absorbing more food and not leaving a bunch of fillers for me to shovel.

My dogs eat what I eat. Their Doctor says they're the healthiest dogs he's ever seen. If you want to give your dogs a good treat, smoke their food. Yes, their dog food. I'm not kidding. I used to do it before I started feeding them people food.
For treats I cut the rounded ends off the beef or venison sticks I make and freeze them. It only takes a minute for one or two to thaw.

We use Nutro..either the natural choice or ultra. Everything is digestible. Less crap in means less crap out . Our little guy is small so a large bag goes a long way, so don't mind paying the extra.

Not really. Years ago we had a very picky Boston Terrior. He might eat the same food for a couple of months, then for no reason, he'd stop. I got tired of trying to read his mind, and one day while smoking a turkey, my wife brings out a big collinder full of dog food and tells to smoke it for an hour or so.
It worked. He ate it, and I've never looked back.
So now, when I think about it, I'll throw some in the smoker for a treat, and they love it.
Credit goes to my wife for figuring out how to please a picky BT.

I know that I am brand new to smoking meat, but one thing I do know about is dogs. I have been training, breeding, and competing with Rottweilers for 15 years. Currently I have 3 of them 2 with 4 CAN-AM Tiltle Championships. Here are my view towards food.

1 - Anything with any connections to China I WOULD NOT TRUST!!!! A massive recall happened last year that took the lives of too many animals way to early. China often subcontracts the manufacturing of the foods, so the only great concern is cost not quality. Generally the biggest concern is cross contamination with chemicals. That is what sparked the recall.

2 - In my opinion at one time Science Diet use to be a good food. As the market grew they just seemed to lapse, not improve there quality and rely on there name.

3 - Any food that consists of grain, mindlings, beet pulp, and corn I would avoid. These additives are nothing but fillers and offer zero benefit to your dog. Remember the basic genetic makeup of a dog is that of a carnivore. Meat with good fat content is the key. My lads are on a mix of raw lamb and veal, and a grain free kibble known as Acana made by Orijen. All of there products are grain free and pretty reasonable in cost. Because of the quality of the food a little goes along way.

On a final note for anybody that has dogs that are getting up there in years please dont get caught up in the hype of foods that promote hip, joint or bone stability. Generally if that is advertised there is a minimum of the supplement included in the food to do any benefit. Walmart is fantastic for a supplement called Glucosamine, Chrondotin and MSM. The people grade is great for helping the old lads with stiffness. 2 tabs daily for all of my lads. My oldest is going on 9 and he still runs like a deer, and bites like me at a chinese buffet!!!

Interesting. A neighbor has a Dalmatian that is 17 years old. She doesn't get around much anymore. Except for her afternoon constitutional walk around the pasture. I shall tell him about this.
