  • New member from the heart of BBQ Country...

    Boston, Massachusetts.

I just signed up to aid my quest for a new smoker. I've used Webers, a Brinkman electric water smoker, and most recently a Bradley Smoker. However, the Bradley was torn up by a bear in my yard this spring. So I'm in search of a new machine. Quality wise the water smoker yielded my best BBQ, but it required lots of attention, as did the Weber. The Bradley required little attention, but yielded the least satisfactory results. I'm looking for high quality AND ease of use. I hope y'all can help me! I do a little bit of everything... ribs, chicken, salmon, trout, shoulder and brisket.

Im not convinced that you will ever get top quality with little or no effort...But I'll never bash a guy for trying...

Welcome! You can get great Q with a minimal amount of effort from a Pellet cooker. Maybe something like a Yoder YS 480 or YS 640 would be fitting for you.

              Welcome from Florida!

I recently purchased a Green Mountain Grills portable (Davy Crockett).
              http://greenmountaingrills.com/produ...davy-crockett/

I've only used it a couple times but it works fine. I think it's a Treager with a new skin, but it has given me no problems and I kinda "tested it" when I first got it. Changed temps and finished hot (chiggen). They are pretty affordable, I got this one used, real cheap. It's intended for the hunt camp so I can go hunting for three or four hours and have din din ready when I get back. Runs on 12V also.

It's not a real fire (lump or wood), might not get the same barque, but it works.

                  Welcome aboard...

As far as the water smokers, try sand in the pan during the colder months to keep temps constant, longer. All the water pan or ceramics do is provide a baffle for indirect heat.

Give it a shot and see what happens. Worked wonders for me in CO in the winter.

I think the 10 gauge steel construction of a YS640's cook chamber would put up quite a challenge for a bear to damage...

The more complex and computerized the cooker, the more things that can go wrong with it, at what is usually a very inconvienent time.......
Once you go Weber....you never call customer service....
