  • FNG from the Colorado Rockies

    Hey all,

Been grilling for 35 years from weber kettles to Vermont Castings 5 burner natural gas grill for the last 10 years (wedding present from the wife). Starting to research ceramic cookers and leaning towards a Primo XL. Looking forward to learning from you guys.

    Thanks,

    Roger

Nice! When I moved here from the south in 1992, it was a sad town for BBQ joints. It's improved since, but still not a strong suit for the city. I grew up in Birmingham, AL and was glad to see the first Jim N Nicks BBQ open here. Have you tried that place?

Thanks! I use to be a forum moderator and always laughed when I saw the FNG note - knew they weren't wet behind the ears.

Thanks one and all for the welcome.

My local Ace Hardware is having a demo of the BGEs and a couple of pellet cookers (Traeger & Louisiana) this weekend so I'm going to check it out. I was initially interested in the pellets (Yoder YS640) but after doing a lot of research, I'm leaning towards a ceramic now since I'd like a good direct heat for grilling in addition to smoking capabilities. Truth be told, I'll probably be grilling more than smoking, but we'd like to start smoking our own chicken and turkeys for lunch meats, and then ribs, butt, brisket occasionally too.

                    from New Jersey.

I too researched the Yoder pellet smokers and ended up buying a Big Green Egg. I am comfortable using charcoal and wood chunks so why change a good thing I thought. The only regret I have is I should've bought an XL instead of a large. The BGE's are great for everything, including pizza, bread, and any kind of baking, not to mention of course smoking and grilling.
Lang 36 Patio, a few Webers, 2 Eggs, plenty of gadgets and a MES 40 Gen 2.5 electric for bacon and sausage.
My best asset however is the inspiration from the members on this forum.

Nope, I have never eaten in a BBQ joint here. I just go out back and get the coals lit
