      And we're off.

The instructor figures in four class periods it will be down to bare metal.

I don't think I mentioned it in this thread but this build will be a class project for our local high school metal shop. I will pay for the materials and the students, under the supervision of the instructor, will to the build. This summer they will enter it in the county fair.

I am predicting they will do well at the fair. It will be very unique and different than what the judges usually see.

And it just might smell like hickory smoked pork fat by then also.

Out of curiosity what is the diameter of the tank and thickness? I snagged a nice tank from my shop and it was a lot thinner than I thought it would be.

Glad there is still a high school that has a metals shop. Nice project.

The ends are coming off. It will be cut to 48". It's pretty darn close to 48" from seam to seam.

The end with the feet would make a nice fire pit for someone.

Tank diameter is 20" as far as I can tell. Haven't measured exact inside diameter yet.

The thickness according to my calipers (thumb and forefinger ) appear to be 1/4". The shop teacher was guessing 1/4" as well. It's a heavy sum bitch, that's for sure.

Busy day at work today. I didn't have a chance to go down to the metal shop and check on things until after school. Looks like they've been making progress. Also looks like they've been hitting it with a torch.

They uncovered this plate. I thought it was interesting.

                      It's an old sum bitch.

                      And 1/4" apparently.

Make sure they preserve that...It'll make a cool addition to your smoker...But it will be sideways when the tank is horizontal

Actually the letters are right side up when the tank is horizontal. I rotated the picture to make it easier to read.
