  • Thaan Charcoal

Anyone familiar with this charcoal?* *Walked into Earthfare today and they had it labeled at $7.99/5lb box, however the the boxes are actually 30lbs each.* So I couldn't help but grab 3 boxes and may go get some more.* Figure I'll use this for specialty cooks but it should last a long time.

Never heard of it but found this info online.

Thai-style charcoal, in small, tightly compressed logs, about four inches long and made from the wood of rambutan trees, burns consistently and persistently with little smoke and ash. (This type of charcoal is called binchotan in Japan.) Andy Ricker of the Pok Pok Thai restaurants in New York and Portland, Ore., was so impressed with how it performs that he is importing it. Place pieces upright in your chimney starter, and use newspaper (more than usual) or paraffin to get them going. Allow 30 minutes or so, longer than regular hardwood charcoal or briquettes, before they are ready. But then they sure do last. And they tend not to flare up: Pok Pok Thaan Charcoal, $9 for five pounds from shop.pokpoksom.com.

Sounds like you made a huge score!

Go grab as much of it as you can at that price.

              Nice score

You got lucky. Whoever was working there didn't bother to read the side of the box, open to look inside the big box to see that there was 6-5lb boxes inside that big box, or notice that the box weighed more than 5lbs.
Hope you get the same lazy store clerk when you go back.

Yes, I've cooked with it a few time now. Cooked with is yesterday in the kettle. Had to cook 40lbs of chicken and needed to be able to keep the grill hot for a long time so I put 6 unlit pieces in the bottom of the Vortex then poured a full chimney of lit Weber coals on top. This improvised minion method gave me nice hot temps and burned consistent for 2.5hrs before needing to add more only because the Weber coals had burned down.

I've also used it in my UDS tossing a few bricks in my cola basket to help extend a cook that I needed to run for 2 days.

Yes it does as long as what you're cooking isn't very fatty as those drippings do create a small amount of smoke.
