...after searching the forum to fix my new smoker. I bought a used 500 gal reverse flow smoker for a good deal. My first trial burn was an epic failure.
With the largest fire possible in the box it would only get to 200-225 once the door on the firebox was closed. That temp started dropping almost immediately.
After a little research and number crunching on a calculator I found the problem.
Not near enough air venting in the firebox. After cutting 4 - 3 1/2" x 4" holes its running much better. gets to temp and maintains much better with 1/3rd the fuel. now I have to work on the chimney fine tunning.

Sorry for the long intro. Just wanted to thank everyone on the great info on the forum.

Dude! My wife and son bought my first side box smoker about 20 years ago. I stuck a brisket in it, built my fire, and throttled it down and went to bed. I was so excited the next morning. It was still smoking!!!! Wow! It had been smoking for 10 hours. I took the brisket out, and it was totally raw. Smoked to all be jeebers, but raw.
