Around here T-Bone & Porterhouse are usually priced the same.
Often on sale for $5.99 (Choice)
                  IMHO---That's over-priced---They should be about $1.99.

I agree, however my question was it appears to be the same cut ??

The way I understand it, they are in effect the same cut. At least cut from the same primal. the Porterhouse just has a larger section of the filet compared to the t-bone. They both consist of a filet and a ny strip, still connected to the bone. At least that's what I've been told.

oh, and damn Fish, those are some good prices. Was looking in the butcher case at the local supermarket the other week and they had choice porterhouse for $12.99/lb. I laughed and kept walking. Wish we had a decent butcher around here.

on edit: this link does a good job at explaining the difference
                        http://www.primesteakhouses.com/tbon...use-steak.html

The Porterhouse is much larger [than a t-bone] and is sometimes served for two. The USDA specifications require the filet portion must be at least 1.25" thick at its widest point to qualify labeling as a Porterhouse Steak. A T-Bone Steak must be at least 0.25" thick. Any smaller, it would be called a Club Steak.

Here is next week's specials. I've been eyeing these "bundles" that they advertise from time to time like at the bottom of this flyer...but I don't have the freezer space!

Oh--OK----I guess this is about it:
Both cuts come from the short loin, the tender section of muscle between the rib and the sirloin. The short loin is composed of the top loin and the ultra tender tenderloin, (better known as fillet mignon when cut into steaks). The large side of the T-bone and porterhouse is the top loin (NY Strip Steak) and the smaller side is the tenderloin (Filet Mignon). But because the T-bone is cut from the center of the short loin, as opposed to the porterhouse which is cut from the larger end, the T-bone will have a smaller piece of the tenderloin than the porterhouse. Usually one to two bites. Therefore, if they are priced the same, you will get more of the tenderloin for your money with the porterhouse.
