  • Wanderers Punch from Nankin's Minneapolis

This is a blast from the past for anyone who was lucky enough to sip this knockout punch back in the day.

I have made this exact recipe myself and can vouch for it being a near perfect recollection of the original, which I enjoyed on more than one occasion back in the 80's.

The recipe itself is detailed in the final paragraphs of the article. Pay attention to the warning in the last paragraph. I am very much a larger than average man (more so today than back then unfortunately) and the power of this cocktail is very much underestimated.

    Cheers...

Sounds pretty dang good to me!!!!!

For the sake a reasonable volume, I've taken the original recipe as posted and downsized it a bit.

Original which made approximately 2 2/3 gallons:

In a 5-gallon container (and no, that is not a typo), combine:
    • 1 gallon orange juice
    • 1 liter sweet-and-sour mix
    • 2/3 bottle Rose’s Grenadine (“the tall bottle,” they wrote)
    • 1/2 liter Triple Sec
    • 1 liter Bacardi light rum
    • 1 liter Meyer's dark rum
    • 1 liter Bacardi golden rum
    • 1 liter 151-proof rum

Mix well, serve “in a big fishbowl glass” over ice with a maraschino cherry and an orange slice. “Paper parasol optional,” they wrote.

A final note, and a notable one. “This is an extremely intoxicating beverage,” they wrote. “Do not drink on an empty stomach. Don’t let its pretty pink color fool you; most people are sloshed before they finish their second one. It is called the Wanderer because when you try to get up from your barstool you commonly find yourself unable to walk a straight line. If you underestimate this drink, I am not responsible for your actions, whether you remember them or not.”

Downsized version (and all measurements are in US fluid ounces for us non-metric folks) which should be right at 1 gallon when mixed:
    • 48.5 ounces or 6 cups orange juice
    • 12.7 ounces or 1 2/3 cups sweet-and-sour mix
    • 8.7 ounces or 1 cup Rose’s Grenadine
    • 6.4 ounces or 3/4 cup Triple Sec
    • 12.7 ounces or 1 2/3 cups Bacardi light rum
    • 12.7 ounces or 1 2/3 cups Meyer's dark rum
    • 12.7 ounces or 1 2/3 cups Bacardi golden rum
    • 12.7 ounces or 1 2/3 cups 151-proof rum

I love coming home. My back porch smells just like a BBQ joint.....

      Drink up, Shriners...

you drink several of those and you wake up the next day and it feels like a "Hairy Buffalo" slept in your mouth

Sounds pretty close to the hurricane drink they serve at Pat O'Briens in New Orleans. All you need is one of these. 3 gallon size.

Vodka on the rocks, splash of cranberry and a chunk of lime. That's it for me.
