    Advice from The Old Farmers Alamanac in myemail this morning;

    Planting by the Moon

    The lengthening days gladden our hearts. It’s time to start planting gardens in many parts of the country.

    The best time to plant flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground is during the light of the Moon (from the day of the new Moon to the day of the full Moon).

    Flowering bulbs and vegetables that bear crops below ground should be planted during the dark of the Moon (from the day after the full Moon to the day before the new Moon).

    Planting Advice From 1903

    The time is now at hand for earnest work in preparing the soil for planting most of the garden and field crops. You have, no doubt, before this time decided just what crops to plant on each piece of land.

    You would not think about planting your asparagus roots on your heavy soil, nor of planting your corn on your light, sandy loam, which is best adapted to asparagus.

    Household

    Spring-Cleaning! It’s about that time for spring-cleaning, and we have tips on easy ways to clean using everyday household items.

    • To remove white water spots on leather, cover them with a thick coat of petroleum jelly. Leave the petroleum jelly in place for about a day, then wipe it off with a soft cloth.
    • To clean the filter in your dryer, first use an old toothbrush to remove any lint. Then soak the filter in vinegar overnight and rinse it with water.
    • Before you start to vacuum, put a few drops of lemon juice into the dust bag. It will make the house smell fresh.
    • Yellowed linens can be brightened with denture-cleaning tablets. Dissolve tablets (according to package directions) in a sink or washbasin of warm water. Add the stained linens and soak until the discoloration is gone. Wash as usual.
