Also, by adding dolomite or granulated lime to your acidic soil will help balance or netralize between acid and alkaline therefore allowing the plant to absorb more nutrients. But certain plants like blueberry prefer acid. You can purchase a ph meter real cheap now at garden center to test your own soil.

Heh... Well, I din't mean to 'start" anything. I understand the organics Vs. the chem thing. I HAVE mixed in over the years some "compost" as it were, and the vermiculited potting soils, etc. It's gotten better, and for this season's solution just wanted to know if there was a better brand to use.

It's JUST STUPID FLOWERS tho! LOL! I figger this fall I'll grab sone old manure from by Ma's place and get that in there.

Throw some high-nitrogen stuff on it (the first number of the 3 usually given). I use blood meal - comes in a bag.

I once was told Round-Up is just a super fertilizer. Makes dumb plants grow so fast they die. Maybe put some plastic flowers on the tomato plants.

              Gives them "cancer?" Huh.

Hey Rich, sounds to me that you need to rent a Kenworth and take a vacation to Montana. My brother has a peat moss and potting soil plant and if you have sandy soil, peat works great to hold the moisture. He brought me another 25 yards last week. We have good black dirt here so I tilled about 6 inches of peat into the garden and it looks great. On your PH problem, I too was gonna suggest lime. On the fertilizer, I am another one that uses triple 16 (we don't have triple 13).

I don't remember you being the one that stated "game on."

In a world full of suburban developments with a whopping 4 floor plans to choose from and garage dominated front yards, landscaping is what sets one house apart from the neighbors. And flowers are part of that landscaping. Not that that's your situation, but you get the point. Even out here in the sticks, landscaping is important so your house doesn't blend in with the sticks, although I like that idea too sometimes.

I'm not playing since the only prize is an overinflated anonymous ego. So you win, congratulations.
But to respond; I understand that soil management is most important, but any farmer, gardener, botanist, or horticulturist, organic or otherwise, will agree that nutrient management is a very important part of a successful soil conservation program. It's all about balancing what God gave us and what mother nature leaves us.
For the record, my step Dad was one of the first farmers in SW Iowa to successfully utilize no-till farming and terracing. He won many soil conservation, and corn and soybean yield awards for his efforts. He's gone now, but the 1300 acre farm we owned still produces some of the highest yields in Iowa.
Rich's flowers are growing now. He wanted an answer for what's going on now. He's not going to eat them, and Miracle Grow or triple 13 isn't going to hurt them or him at all.

                  Tom

I agree, I spend alot of coin each spring and summer to beautify my front flower garden.. It does set our house apart from the others on the block.
