Not really. When we had kids at home some years back we had an acre at the house and 2 more some years down in a river bottom.

This is the acre that once was my pride and joy. Everything from asparagus to zucchini including fruit trees.

Shit I can barely find time to tend my 1200 sq. ft.
No way I would challenge a full acre...

I worked second shift and that help. We had good equipment and a great mentor back then along with illegal child labor. We mulched all of the acre with wheat straw I'd buy in the field in July for the coming year. 150 bales got plowed down each fall. Most everything was grown on a medium height ridge covered with black plastic to keep rains from pounding the black clay into bricks and retain moisture during droughts. With straw in the middles and plastic on the ridges not a whole lot of work. Keeping 500 tomato plants pruned was the most of the work.

My neighbor is retired and 75 and he maintains a 2+ acre garden every year. Gives most of it away. He had a buddy of his last year that wanted some fresh grown onions so he planted over 300 of them.

He's got more drive at 75 then most have in their 20's.

That's a nice restaurant for all kinds of critters.

                        1. How do you deal with critters?

                        2. What is you monthly water bill? $$$$?

Amazing plot to deal with food shortages.

Water bill won't be over $40 a month. Farmer's market sales will cover all expenses including seed, fertilizer, and water, etc. 4 years from an extra $3,000 net a year from just fruit. Retirement job.

40+ fruit trees not in the picture. The picture is just veggies and berries.

One side of the drive way is sweet cherries. Showcase of spring blooms. Need a BB gun to scare off the birds.

What we are trying to grow here is what can't be bought or is to expensive in the markets. Fordhook Lima beans, zipper cream peas, okra, etc. Fordhook Limas are shelled for frozen in the stores way past their prime. Has to be that way for them to machine shell. Zipper Cream peas unheard of. Okra higher than a kite. Fall crop will include kohl rabi with other cool weather veggies. Only staples planted are potatoes and sweet corn. Fresh dug potatoes mashed and buttered are much better than store bought. Same with sweet corn pick, shucked, prepared however. 2 years until the asparagus is producing enough to freeze for off season. Same for freezing and drying a bounty of fresh fruit as well as homemade jams. My estimate is the over all plot is around a 1\4 acre. About 3X what me wife wanted. Oh well.
