I can vouch for that "coonass" thing, since I am a Yankee.
My best 9th Div Inf, Vietnam Buddy was from West Monroe, LA, and he called himself a coonass. I never asked him why---I just laughed at the term. I have heard the term used a number of times since (1969), and usually from someone calling themselves by that name. It seems to me as something to brag about, by someone from LA.
However---Some Italians tell Italian Jokes, and some hate them!!!
I happen to be Pennsylvania Dutch, and one of the funniest ethnic jokes I ever heard was the only PA Dutch joke I ever heard, and it is probably only funny to a PA Dutchman, so I doubt you guys would think it was very funny.
Oh well---Just my 2¢
