  • What happens when you try to watch the NHL All Star game and make FIU pretzels?

I was also trying to make dinner and rebuild my new/used slicer.

As i posted before, I have not been real successful at this whole bread thing...

FIU made it look so easy
    http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/sho...light=pretzels

I did learn a few things though and will have to try again.

I tried to cut the recipe in half to keep it manageable for me, (and the birds have enough to eat)

First the yeast did not "foam" like it is suppose to. I did use my thermo pen and added yeast at 110 degrees. I think my sea salt may have thrown it off a bit.

Then it seemed like it was never going to "rise" and I sort of figured out it was just going to be one of those tests that I do every once in a while. Maybe I kneeded it too long, salt was too strong, bad yeast etc.

Did I say there was a hockey game on?

Next thing I know I have to get dinner ready before the wife gets home. I take a look again and see that it sort of grew larger than it was.

Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel.....but rolling the dough out should be easy......just look at FIU pictures, his are beautiful.

Well a couple of them started to look like a pretzel.....Heck I could not even make a pretzel stick......

Oops I better turn the oven on, and get dinner ready.

Did I mention there was a hockey game on?

Well they don't look the greatest, and I don't think I will take them to the shop for my friends to try, but they do taste pretty good.

Can't wait to try the bagels.

That would be my first guess.
How old is the yeast and do you store it in the fridge or freezer?

Sorry they didn't shape up the way you wanted but at least they still tasted good.
Tried to find a page with some good pics or video of the way I shape mine but most don't have pics of the shaping process or do it in a more difficult way but I did find this site with some tasty looking pretzels (I gotta do the jalapeno and cheese ones ) that is a really simple and nice looking way to shape them.

This page shows how I do mine but the pics aren't as easy to make out

Haven't tried it yet but I know some folks will roll the dough out then cut into 1" pieces and make pretzels bites.
That would be a good idea for Super Bowl or other parties probably.

It was fun, running from the laptop to keep looking at your pictures and step by step.

The yeast I had (still have) has a July expiration. I just store the little packets in the a kitchen drawer. I did use regular active yeast versus self rising yeast. (still don't know what the real difference is)

I am learning all the things I need to change.... I'll get it right one of these days.......

The other thing I did was to mix the sugar and salt before I heated the water.

Anyhow, sitting here now with one with some dipping cheese, good enough for me.

Looks great! That's the 5 beers into the event eating. Don't have to be pretty. Many bar jokes dealing with women for that line!
