They did well, even in the brutal Az summer. I did make a Tee fitting with a surface line with misters to water the surface. I did this after watching the initial article on Youtube where the author said he still watered the surface during the hottest months of the year.
Mrs Otis grew herbs mainly and lots of radishes in these planters to try them out, and now has Brussel Sprouts, melons and a loufa plant(taking over) growing in them now. Its getting into the fall/winter season here so she will be trying something different. I think we are going to do one of them with nothing but onions (we're onionaholics).Mike

You should have even better luck in Oregan than we did in AZ. The dry heat and number of 100+ days make summer gardening a real challenge. It was apparent that we did need a way to make sure the soil on the surface didnt totally dry out. Since I plumbed a water supply in, I just used a 1/4 turn ball valve above the soil surface with a line back down to the water reservoir to refill it as needed. I used a tee and another valve to redirect the flow to the surface misting nozzles when it was scorching hot.
Check out this guys site. He's a little dorky but knows hos sh!t when it comes to this topic.
