  • Need help with wood ID

I' m new here, and to smoking in general. So we has to drop aprox 20 trees and since there are future plans in the back yard for a smoker, though I might be able to use some of the wood down the road. Having a hard time identifying since no leaves. Maybe some of the seasoned pros could lend a hand?? Thanks in advance!

Now onto the wood, I think it looks like a maple of some sort.

Welcome to Smoked-Meat! Is it hard as hell to split? Stringy? Almost looks like shagbark hickory to me.

              from DelaWhere!

Me thinks you have either oak or maple there... hard to tell. Both are excellent smoking woods.

              Drinks well with others

                  got any leaves ?

Leaves are generally much easier to identify than bark :-)

But I'd go for some sort of oak at the moment.

Could be sweet gum, which is not good for smoking.

The Texan in me says it is Pecan, I use A Lot of it and it has the same bark and dark centers.. It could be Hickory but not sure about shagbark.. The bark on these looks to tight and not shingled..

I suppose either would be easy to diagnose..are there nuts on the ground around the area?

There were oak leaves on the ground after second look... More trees around ?

Thanks to everyone for the welcome and feedback!
I bought the house and property late last fall, so not real familiar with the trees. Very dense population and looks like aprox 5-6 different kinds. Nuts are everywhere, but hard to tell which tree they fall from. Hopefully will have some leaves soon on the others and then should be easier to ID. I was thinking a shagbark, just not as shaggy as some..it does fall off easy.
For now I'm going to stockpile and let season. If anyone is close to Louisville KY and want to give some a try, let me know, I have more than I know what to do with!
