FSIS announces two recalls of pork products
    12/23/2014 - by Erica Shaffer

WASHINGTON – Two companies recently recalled pork products, the Food Safety and Inspection Service reported.

Abe's Finest Meats, Palatka, Fla., initiated a recall of approximately 80,050 lbs. of hickory smoked sliced bacon because sodium nitrite was not declared on the product label. FSIS personnel discovered the problem during a label review. No illnesses have been reported according to the agency.

The affected products include 10-lb. bulk frozen packages of “CEDAR CREEK HICKORY SMOKED SLICED BACON.” These products bear establishment number “EST. 18747” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The bacon was produced on various dates between July 23 and Dec. 11. The products were shipped to distributors in Florida and Georgia.

A second recall came from BMG Trading, Inc. in Oakville, Ontario. The company is recalling 26,108 lbs. of pork flank leg products that were produced without benefit of inspection, according to FSIS. The problem was discovered during a weekly review of import shipping data via the Public Health Information System (PHIS). Inspectors found that the product was not presented to FSIS for re-inspection at the Canadian border and was distributed in the United States. There have been no reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of the products.

The affected products include 1,800 lb. (approximate) combo bins containing 65 to 75 legs of “PORK LEG FLANK ON COMBO.” The pork flank leg items were produced on Dec. 16. and bear the establishment number “394” inside the Canadian mark of inspection as well as a health certificate number listed as “CERT. No. CERT. 097400.” These products were shipped to retail locations for further processing in Arizona.

So what happens to all this meat? I assume its all destroyed. I can see destroying any that a consumer bought cause who knows if they tampered with it. But couldn't a grocery slap a new sticker on it with sodium nitrite in the ingredients? What a waste. Somebody is getting fired. 80000x$5
